If not Sarfraz Ahmed, who else? - Wasim Akram hits back at Pakistan skipper’s critics
He also talked about Pakistan's tour of South Africa.
Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed has always been under the scanner as far as his captaincy is concerned. Even as he captained the team to their 11th T20 series victory against New Zealand, he hasn’t quite been able to weave magic in Test and ODI cricket. Recently, Pakistan, under his leadership, lost the two-match Test series against the Kiwis following their 123-run defeat in Abu Dhabi.
He also failed to lead the team to the final of the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following which the national team was severely bashed. Moreover, talks of him quitting Test captaincy has been doing the rounds. In the meantime, the commotion surrounding the issue hasn’t gone down well with former Pakistani fast bowler Wasim Akram by any stretch of the imagination.
Sarfraz is playing good cricket
He lashed out at Sarfraz’s critics and asked them to find an appropriate replacement of Sarfraz. Moreover, he also agreed that Pakistan’s upcoming tour of South Africa, which gets underway on December 26 with the first Test, would pose stern challenges to the visitors.
“I have been hearing about this for the last month or two. If not Sarfraz then who? Somebody give me a name of who would replace Sarfraz. There are no Imran Khan or Javed Miandad waiting in line to replace him. Sarfraz is playing good cricket. The upcoming tour to South Africa will be very challenging,” Akram was quoted as saying in Geo News.
Test series consists of two more matches in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively. Thereafter, the Men in Green would lock horns with the Proteas in a five-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series. With the World Cup set to start in around five-months time, Sarfraz, well and truly, has his task cut out in order to help his team do well in the mega event in England and Wales.
