'If one Sachin wasn't enough, we've got another' - Brett Lee lavishes massive praise on Virender Sehwag
"I hope there are many more batters who emulate Virender Sehwag's batting style," Lee said.
Former Australian bowling ace and cricketing great Brett Lee has lavished praises on former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, hailing him as one of the toughest batters he ever bowled to. Lee said he has always regarded Sachin Tendulkar as the toughest batter to bowl to, but holds Sehwag in the same regard.
Lee, regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, terrorised batters with his raw pace and accuracy throughout his career and had some riveting battles against modern-era greats like Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Jacques Kallis, and Sehwag. While the tearaway pacer had some epic battles with Tendulkar, he hailed the sensational abilities of his opening partner Virender Sehwag.
Lee said that he thought Sehwag to be a spitting image of Tendulkar due to the similarities in their batting stance. The batter surprised him with his fearless approach even in red-ball cricket.
“The guy that looked a little bit like Sachin Tendulkar when he was batting. And I thought ‘here we go again. Another Sachin Tendulkar. If one wasn’t enough, we’ve got another one and he is opening the batting’. We in the Australian team had a ploy for Sehwag and even start the Test match with a third man, trying to suck him in to hit one down there. We tried that in an ODI match one day, and he wacked it… absolutely nailed it out of the ground,” Lee said on his YouTube channel.
Virender Sehwag is so hard to bowl to because of his unpredictability: Brett Lee
The two-time World Cup winner has been one of the fastest bowlers ever to have graced the game and hailed the mentality of Sehwag. He highlighted the unpredictability of the Indian batter, which made it extremely difficult to bowl to him. The pacer said that he was one of the most fearsome batters of all time, who slew bowlers with a smile on his face.
“You think of the word cruel. You think of the word swashbuckling. Think of the world as unpredictable, I think of none other than Virender Sehwag. He played with a smile on his face, with intent… the type of guy that would quite likely want to hit the first ball of a Test match for six… and he has done it. He is a guy that is so hard to bowl to because as I mentioned, of the unpredictability,” Lee added.
