I’m sure about my role while playing for Australia, it changes in most games in IPL: Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell, the Australian cricketer, reckons that there’s a vast difference between when he’s playing for his national team and in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Victorian is currently a part of the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and he is yet to score big in the tournament, though he has given glimpses of his sheer best.

Maxwell stated that while playing for Australia, the team combination doesn’t change much and he’s aware of his role in the team. On the contrary, the right-hander feels that he needs to be assigned a clearer role in the IPL.

“I probably would not (compare IPL and Australia career). The way I have played international cricket, it has been more of a clearer role. I know exactly how the guys will bat around me,” Maxwell was quoted as saying in The Times of India (TOI).

“My role in IPL changes probably for most games. In IPL, a lot of teams change their sides a lot. In the Australian set-up, we have the same eleven for most of the games, we all know our roles really well,” he stated.

The Punjab-based franchise, led by KL Rahul, are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table. Apart from beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 97 runs after Rahul’s unbeaten 132, KXIP haven’t put their best foot forward.

However, Maxwell feels that the team are close to finding the right combination. Moreover, he stated that KXIP have been straining every sinew to make a comeback.

“We feel we are getting closer to that (team balance). I have had different experiences (in the IPL) where I have not quite performed to the level people expect but there has been no lack of trying, (or) putting the effort in training,” he said.

Back in 2014, when the IPL, partially, took place in the UAE, Maxwell notched 552 runs and helped his team finish as the runners-up. However, as per him, 2017 was his ‘best season’ since he tried his hands out on various aspects of the game.

“Despite the fact I did well in 2014, I actually thought my performance in 2017 was my best season. Being captain, man of the match multiple times and I bowled a lot more,” he added.
