Rangana Herath is one of the finest spinners to have represented Sri Lanka at the highest level. The left-arm spinner is one of the three bowlers from the island-nation after legends Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas to complete 300 red-ball scalps.

It has been more than three years since Herath has bid adieu to the game and now, he works as Bangladesh’s spin-bowling coach. Lately, it has been reported that the former spin sensation has a vision for the team that would help it perform well in the ICC T20 World Cup Down Under in October-November this year. The good news for the Tigers is that they would not have to play the qualifiers this time, unlike in the 2021 edition.

Before T20 WC, we have a few games: Rangana Herath

“Before the T20 WC, we have a few games. At the same time, if we have more preparation before the World Cup in Australia that’s going to be very important. I’m sure BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) will be working towards it,” Cricbuzz quoted Herath as telling reporters.

If the BCB permits, it could turn out to be fruitful for three-time Asia Cup finalists who have earned a Super 12 qualification while two-time winners West Indies have been relegated to the qualifiers. Bangladesh will also get the much-needed practice to familiarize themselves with Australian conditions.

As of now, both Herath and Bangladesh are focusing on the ongoing limited-over series against Afghanistan at home. Having won the one-day international series 2-1, the hosts are now looking to seal the T20 international series. The teams will lock horns in the second and final T20I at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday, March 5. Bangladesh are currently leading the two-match series after an emphatic 61-run win in the first game at the same venue on Thursday, March 3.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, would be hoping to come out on top and sign off on a high by leveling the series.
