The last several months must have been painful for talented wicket-keeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha. The Bengal gloveman was seen as a long-term successor to MS Dhoni in Test matches but injury ruled him out during the away series against South Africa early last year. He did not play for many months after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 and made a comeback to competitive cricket only recently, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the Test arena, though, the meteoric rise of Rishabh Pant has made the return of Saha difficult.

Saha looking forward to IPL 2019

The 34-year-old has taken the competition healthily for he knows opportunities do not wait for anybody. He takes the challenge of making a comeback with an open heart and aims to produce eye-catching performances. Saha played some good knocks in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, including a 62-ball 129 against Arunachal Pradesh and now he is preparing to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the upcoming IPL.

In his times of struggle, Saha remembers something that Dhoni, with whom he has shared the dressing room in the past, had told him and that keeps him motivated. Dhoni had told him to back his basic strength. “I had last spoken to MS bhai when I was part of the team with him. But I remember one thing he always told me. He said that I should focus on backing my basic strength,” Saha was quoted as saying by India Today.

“He insisted that if the path I took from day one has got me till here, I should keep looking to follow just that and not change anything. I follow that to the hilt.”

When asked if was in talks with the Indian team management while undergoing rehab, Saha said he met the team after undergoing an operation in England. “After that when I was at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the team management kept a check through the trainers at the NCA,” he said.
