India opener Rohit Sharma is facing the heat on Twitter after failing to deliver with the bat in the ongoing first Test against England at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. England started the proceedings with the bat on day three with the scoreboard reading 555 for 8. Dom Bess and Jack Leach could add only 12 more runs to the overnight score before the former was sent back by Jasprit Bumrah.

11 runs later, England’s mammoth innings came to an end when Ravichandran Ashwin castled James Anderson. With the tourists posting a mammoth total of 578, India needed a good start with the bat. And with the pitch offering very little help to the bowlers, Rohit and his opening partner Shubman Gill had the opportunity to score big.

However, the senior opener failed to cash in on the fine batting pitch as he departed for just 6. It was a poor shot from Rohit as he tried to push a delivery from Jofra Archer that was just outside the off-stump. The tentative push cost the India star big as all he could manage was to edge it behind the stumps to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler who made no mistake in taking the regulation catch.

Things became worse for the hosts when Shubman Gill departed soon. Just like Rohit, Gill also threw his wicket away off the bowling of Archer. It was a freebie on the pads for Gill who wanted to play an on-drive. However, he could not keep his shot grounded and hit it straight towards mid-on where Anderson took a fine diving catch.

Gill’s dismissal brought skipper Virat Kohli in the middle. Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara then batted for nearly five more overs before lunch was taken. India were on 59 for 2 at the break, trailing England by 519 runs.

Twitter slams Rohit Sharma

As soon as Archer sent back Rohit, the fans took to Twitter to slam him for yet another failure in Tests. The right-handed batsman has not managed to score big as an opener in Tests since the series against South Africa in 2019 when he was asked to open the innings for the first time. Some fans also criticised him for dropping an easy catch on the second day of the Test while some took a dig at his weight.

Here are some of the reactions to Rohit Sharma’s failure
