India women faced off against the West Indian women in what could only been termed as a quarter-final in the Women’s World T20 match at the IS Bindra Punjab Cricket Association Stadium at Mohali. India needed to win this match and also hope that England women beat Pakistan women in their match while West Indies needed to just win the match and they would qualify for the semis directly.

Mithali Raj of India won the toss and put West Indies into bat in order to know how many runs they would need to chase on a good batting Mohali pitch. Indian bowlers kept picking up wickets at regular intervals and West Indian batswomen had no idea how to play the Indian slow bowlers on a pitch that provided assistance to spinners and was on a bit slower side. Skipper Stafanie Taylor made a valuable 47 runs off 45 balls and she got some much-needed support from Deandra Dottin who contributed 45 runs from 40 balls. The rest of their batting couldn’t reach the double figures and West Indies could only make 114/8 in their 20 overs.

Harmanpreet Kaur was the most successful bowler with 4/23 and Anuja Patil took 3/16.

India had to make 115 in 20 overs and they got the worst possible start ever, losing captain and in-form player Mithali Raj on the first ball of the innings. Mandhana and Krishnamurthy then steadied the ship with some valuable runs before falling for 22 runs and 18 runs respectively. Then the going got tough and Anuja Patil (26 runs) and Jhulan Goswami (25 from 19 balls) kept India in the hunt. Ultimately it came down to 10 runs from the last over and Deandra Dottin made sure that India couldn’t make the required runs, despite Shikha Pandey hitting a four in the over.

India finally fell short by 3 runs and ended their inning at 111/9. Deandra Dottin was the pick of the bowlers with 3/16 in her last over and that brilliant last over, where she defended 10 runs.

India Women: 111/9 in 20 overs (A Patil 26; D Dottin 3/16)
