IND vs NZ: Here's why Shubman Gill didn't open in India's second innings in Mumbai Test
Gill picked up the injury in the 19th over of New Zealand's first innings which was bowled by Jayant Yadav.
India’s opener Shubman Gill dealt with an elbow injury during New Zealand’s first innings in the Mumbai Test. Owing to that the swashbuckling batter did not open the batting in the second innings of the hosts. Cheteshwar Pujara was promoted up the order as he took the opening guard alongside Mayank Agarwal.
Gill picked up the injury in the 19th over of New Zealand‘s first innings which was bowled by Jayant Yadav. The batter was at short midwicket when Kyle Jamieson smashed the ball towards him. While fielding, Gill dropped the catch and also got his elbow injured. He appeared in severe pain and thus walked off the field. Suryakumar Yadav then came in as a substitute fielder.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took it to their official Twitter account to provide an update on Gill’s injury. “🚨 Update 🚨: Shubman Gill suffered a blow to his right elbow while fielding in the first innings. He has not recovered completely and hence has not taken the field as a precautionary measure. #TeamIndia #INDvNZ @Paytm,” the Tweet read.
Shubman Gill has started well and shown a lot of promise: Sachin Tendulkar
Gill hit a half-century in the Kanpur Test and then also looked in fine touch in the Mumbai Test wherein he chipped in 44 runs. Ever since his debut in the longest format of the game, the batter has shown immense promise and has brought in some impressive performances to the fore.
Speaking on him, India’s batting legend Sachin Tendulkar reckoned that when it comes to Gill’s technique, there are no issues there. He also added that the batter needs to capitalize on the starts to build on his innings and score big runs.
“When it comes to technique, different surfaces will test you differently. I think Shubman has an advantage as he played very crucial innings (91) in Brisbane where we won the Test match. He has had the experience of playing on hard and bouncy tracks and I felt that he looked pretty comfortable,” Tendulkar said as quoted by Indian Express.
“So, I don’t think there is any technical issue as such. Shubman has started well and shown a lot of promise. The way he builds his innings, he has been good so far. It’s just that he needs to go further and convert those 40s into big scores,” he added.
