Skipper Rohit Sharma has won his first Test match as captain as Team India thrashed Sri Lanka, in the first Test match at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. Riding on Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round brilliance, the hosts clinched the contest by an innings and 222 runs. On Day 3, Sri Lanka resumed their first inning on an overnight score of 108 for the loss of four wickets. However, they could manage to add only 66 runs for the loss of the remaining six wickets.
For visitors, Pathum Nissanka scored an unbeaten 61 and was the top run-getter for the visitors in the first innings. Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja who stroked an unbeaten 175 runs during Indian innings, also bagged a five-wicket haul in his bowling. Ravichandran Ashwin (2/49) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/36) also played their part in wrapping up the Sri Lankan first innings.
Sri Lanka never got going as Ravindra Jadeja brought his A-game out
Without wasting any time, skipper Rohit decided to enforce follow-on as they invited the visitors to have a bat again. However, downfall of the Lankan side continued as they lost their experienced batter Lahiru Thirimanne at a score of nine runs. Sri Lanka’s top-scorer in the first inning, Nissanka also followed the suit soon as he was caught behind off the bowling of veteran spinner Ashwin.
Despite several of their batters getting a start none of them managed to capitalize and went on to make a big score. As a result, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Jadeja continued his good form in the second inning as well scalping four wickets. Pacer Mohammed Shami also chipped in with two wickets. As a result, India eventually clinched the contest by a massive margin.
Earlier in the game, India opted to bat first with contributions coming from most of the batters. Jadeja was the top contributor for the home side, scoring 175 runs. Indian wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant scored 96 runs, while Hanuma Vihari and Ravichandran Ashwin also scored half centuries. As a result India went on to score a humongous 574/8 before declaring their innings. Team India will now lock horns against Sri Lanka in the second Test starting from March 12 and to be played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Sri Lanka look intent on a three-day finish. Wretchedly pusillanimous batting

Ashwin can be very proud of his journey that in the last couple of months he has gone past legends like Kapil Dev and Harbhajan Singh. Can he meet Anil Bhai at the summit? I think he can, what do you think? #INDvSL #CricketTwitter #Ashwin pic.twitter.com/4xUG9iEI09

Comprehensive win. India in top form right through, Sri Lanka sputtered along rather aimlessly in batting and bowling after two okey-dokey sessions on the first day…

Sri Lanka were so bad in this match that India could have given them one more follow-on.
