India-Australia, 2nd Test - Controversies that shook the world

India-Australia games never run out of any controversies. While there are enough field banter and verbal volleys thrown around which generates a level of competitiveness between the players. The second test match at the Chinnaswamy stadium, for instance, has produced much banter on the field.

Right from Ishant Sharma having a go at Matt Renshaw and Steve Smith to Ravichandran Ashwin taking on Mitchell Starc, all this added up in making the game more exciting. However, there were some controversies that were taken off the field.

Virat Kohli was given leg before wicket by the umpire in what was immediately referred by him. The replays were confusing even though it seemed that Kohli might have edged the bat before it touched the pads. However, with no conclusive evidence, the third umpire stayed on with the on-field decision. Kohli seemed disappointed as he returned back to the pavilion pointing out that he had nicked it.

Owing to this and the banter exchange taking place in the field, former Australian cricketer Ian Healy told, “I’m losing respect for him. He’s not only now continuing his disrespect of the Australian players and umpires, but I think he’s putting pressure on his own players,”

Someone was surely not amused to see that coming from Ian Healy as former Pakistani speedster Shoaib Akhtar took on to twitter to express his views.

However, the boiling controversial moment was when Steve Smith who was adjudged LBW by the umpire had a chat with his batting partner before glancing at the dressing room on the DRS advice. Virat Kohli noticed that as he pointed it to umpire Nigel Llong who intervened between and sent back Steve Smith to the pavilion.

There were immediate reactions from the cricketing fraternity including VVS Laxman, Mohammed Kaif, Aakash Chopra and even Adam Gilchrist. The BCCI was quick enough to term it as a Dressing room Review System by Steve Smith.

India went on to win the game and level the series of 1-1, but it didn’t all end there.

After the match, Steve Smith admitted it was a brain fade in his part to have asked for advice from the dressing room. But in his press conference, Virat Kohli alleged that the Australian players had been doing it since the last 3 days.

This wasn’t taken politely by Cricket Australia who questioned Virat Kohli’s allegations.
