India captain Virat Kohli will not be able to vote in Lok Sabha election 2019
Kohli who was earlier a resident of Delhi now has moved to Mumbai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to a number of cricketers – both current and former – to inspire people to come out and cast ballots in Lok Sabha election 2019. Among the top cricketers that the PM had reached out to is Indian captain Virat Kohli. However, in an ironical turn of events, the ace batsman is unlikely to vote himself this time since he was too late to apply for a voter ID card from Mumbai where he resides now.
According to a report, Kohli wanted to vote from Mumbai from where his actress wife Anushka Sharma also takes part in the electoral process. He had applied to vote through the online procedure but was well past the deadline. The final date for applying for the voter ID was March 30 but Kohli couldn’t do it on time.
“The application of Virat Kohli has been received. However, we have kept it on pending. He won’t be able to vote for current Lok Sabha elections because it is too late. Therefore we have put his application on hold, his application will be considered for the next elections,” a TOI report quoted an official of the Election Commission as saying. Kohli wanted to enrol his name from Worli.
Kohli tried to get his name registered several times but failed
It is learnt that Kohli had also called up the commission several times and tried to get his name registered in the voter’s list, particularly after PM Modi personally appealed to him, along with other ace cricketers like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. The EC official said that they had to make him understand since he had missed the deadline.
Kohli is currently playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 where he is leading Royal Challengers Bangalore. The team had a disastrous start to the tournament, losing their first six games but then four of their next five to remain in the hunt for a playoff berth.
