Prior to their ongoing four-match Test series against Australia, India were in an opportunity to change history as they were yet to win an overseas Test series on Australian soil. However, as 2018 is set to come to a close, India are standing on the verge of history for the reason they are currently leading the series 2-1 following their thumping 137-run victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
With the victory, they also retained the Border-Gavaskar series and are scheduled to play the fourth and final encounter, starting Thursday, January 3 at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). They started the series on a positive note with a 31-run win at the renowned Adelaide Oval. However, Virat Kohli and Co couldn’t continue with their show and lost by 146 runs at the new Perth Stadium.
India romp home comfortably
Nevertheless, the visiting team looked a class apart from their opponents at MCG. After setting up a massive score of 443 in the first innings, the bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah, shot Tim Paine’s men for 151, garnering a lead of 292 runs. Aussie fast bowler Pat Cummins came to the party and picked up a six-wicket haul in India’s second innings after which the visitors declared at 106/8.
The target of 399 turned out to be a bridge too far for the Aussies as they bowled out for 261. Cummins scored a gritty half-century, but couldn’t deny India the victory. In the meantime, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag reckons the visiting team has a great chance of creating history in Sydney. Moreover, he also lauded India’s domestic cricket for producing some useful players. Recently, former Aussie cricketer Kerry O’Keeffe mocked Mayank Agarwal’s Ranji triple ton by saying he scored it against Railways Kitchen staff.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Memorable win for #TeamIndia at the MCG. Great team effort and now we have an opportunity to create history at Sydney. Congratulations to each and every member of the team and to our domestic cricket where our cricketers enhance their skills,”
