India lost against England because of their new jersey, feels Mehbooba Mufti
Mufti, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir was blasted by the Twitterati for her viewpoint.
India lost their first game of the ICC World Cup 2019 to England at Edgbaston by 31 runs on Sunday. The win renewed hosts England’s chances of making it to the semi-finals and put in jeopardy the aspirations of Pakistan and Bangladesh for if the Three Lions win their last match against New Zealand, they will go through while the Asian sides will crash out. India, however, are still sitting happily at No.2 position and need just one point to make the last four.
However, despite their good show in the first six games out of which they won five, the reactions to their loss in Birmingham were harsh. Chasing 338 to win, Virat Kohli’s side ended up at 306 for 5 and the fans were not happy with India’s slowish batting in the first and last 10 overs. Particularly, the 39-run partnership between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav in 31 balls towards the end surprised many and it was also being alleged that Indians purportedly lost to keep Pakistan away from the semi-final berths.
As the debate raged on, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti sparked another controversy. The 60-year-old People Democratic Party (PDP) leader said in a tweet that it was India’s new jersey which was responsible for ending the team’s winning streak in the tournament. There was no surprise that she was roasted by the Twitterati because of her observation. She even acknowledged that she could be called “superstitious” because of her viewpoint.
“Call me superstitious but I’d say it’s the jersey that ended India’s winning streak in the #ICCWorldCup2019,” Mufti tweeted last night after the game.
Indian cricketers wore a dark-blue-and-orange jersey in the match to differentiate themselves from England’s blue shade, as per the ICC’s new kit rules. India are among the five teams that had ‘away’ kits in this tournament although their colour was revealed much late.
