The 2018 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy kicked off yesterday. A total of 18 matches will be played between the six teams to decide the eventual champions. Yesterday, three exciting matches were staged, but the main event was India’s clash with Pakistan. The Men in Blue were clinical throughout the contest and notched a jaw-dropping victory by 4-0 against their arch-rivals.

With the victory, they also moved to the top of the points table with three points. India had to wait 25 minutes before Ramandeep Singh took his team into the lead. Dilpreet Singh struck the second goal and most importantly, they had a lead of 2-0 with six minutes remaining. On the contrary, the Green Army was desperate for a comeback and they removed their goalkeeper to bring another attacking player.

Blue Army’s domination

The decision didn’t work out as Mandeep Singh’s deflection took the Men in Blue to their third goal and by then the match was all over bar the shouting. Just before the close of the fourth quarter and also the encounter, Lalit Upadhyay churned out the fourth goal to add to their opponent’s misery. In the other matches, Argentina beat the Netherlands by 2-1 and Australia drew with Belgium by 3-3.

India’s next match is against Argentina and both teams will want to carry on with their winning momentum. Netherlands and Pakistan will also look to make amends in the respective games against Belgium and Australia respectively. Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian cricketing legend, was jubilated by the display from the team and congratulated them on the delightful start.

One of the greatest batsmen to have played the game took to Twitter and wrote “Solid performance. Congratulations, @TheHockeyIndia on a fantastic start to the #ChampionsTrophy. #INDvPAK”.
