About 35 years ago, India launched its first missile, Prithvi into space. It was soon hailed as a milestone in India’s history and carved the path for many more projects to come. It built on the existing and extended the notion of what was possible. Similar was the case with the six that Virat Kohli hit last year in Pune.
To compare a six with one of the biggest milestones in Indian history can be termed over-exaggeration but boy that was something special. It was a kind of shot that none of us might have thought was even possible. And for a shot like that to go the distance, it was incredible! The ball elevated off Virat’s bat exactly like a missile, also the first one ever.
Shubman Gill follows the Indian skippers’ footsteps
India’s U19 sensation Shubman Gill emulated Virat’s shot in a match against Zimbabwe U19. Just like Prithvi set the tone for much more to come, same is the case with Virat’s short arm jab. Gill successfully replicated it and also took everyone by surprise.
After bowling out Zimbabwe for 154, Team India was expected to chase down the target. It wasn’t the usual opening pair that they opted for. The Boys in Blue sent out Harvik Desai and Shubman to ensure everyone got valuable match practice.
This pair warranted that India chased down the target without losing any wickets. This win also booked a berth for India in the quarterfinals. Desai took his time and scored 56 of 73 balls. However, Gill was the aggressor in the partnership and scored a quickfire 90 of just 59 deliveries.
It was during this innings that Gill produced the picturesque shot and caught everyone’s attention. India chased the target down in only 21.4 overs. The short arm jab even took the commentators by surprise. The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) was also awed by the shot. They took it to Twitter to talk about the shot. They compared the pictures of Kohli and Gill playing the shot arm jab side by side.
