The young and talented cricketers representing the U19 Indian side had a very good time in England as they thrashed the hosts in both limited-overs and Test format. Many cricketers performed extraordinarily to hand India a clean sweep in both the formats. Batsman Shubman Gill was the top scorer in the 5-match ODI series with 278 runs. But that was not enough to make his father proud.

The Firozpur, Jharkhand born teenager who will be turning 18 next month smashed two centuries during the tour, but that was not enough to please his father Lakhwinder Gill. After scoring 147 runs in 127 balls in the ODI played at Brighton, he was expecting some words of praise from his father. But instead, he got a scolding for getting out on 147.

“So far, dad was not satisfied with any of my performances. After my 147 in the third ODI, he wanted to know why I got out. He wanted me to score a double hundred. I don’t know when he will congratulate me by saying ‘well played’. Maybe after my first double ton in international cricket,” said the 17-year-old while speaking to Mid-Day.

When your father is your coach

It is always advantageous to have a father who was in the same profession as his child, as that helps in the overall betterments of the young one’s skill, but that can result in rigorous practice even at home after the training sessions, as was the case with Shubham. He revealed that his father would give in 500 throw downs daily and will do a post-mortem of each of his innings.

“He is my coach. He knows all my strengths and weaknesses. We have nets at our residence along with bowling machine. When I’m home in Mohali, I face around 500 throw downs daily. When I get home, he will watch footage of each of my innings. He will analyse my knocks and will point out how I played a particular ball or left a specific one,” said the batsman who at the moment wants nothing but praise from his father.
