Karun Nair got into the Indian team riding on a big player reputation in domestic cricket. However, he failed in his first two innings and it was unlikely that he would play in the Mumbai and Chennai Test. But, the last moment injury to Ajinkya Rahane saw him find a place in the eleven. His best came in the Chennai Test. Coming in at number 5, Nair put on a marathon stand with his Karnataka teammate KL Rahul. Rahul scored 199 but Nair went on.

Batting on the penultimate day of the Test, Nair began at an unbeaten 71. He scored his maidne Test ton. He then accelerated his innings and scored his double ton. Post his 100-run mark, he scored the next 100 in just 120 odd balls. By the end of the day, he saw himself become only the second Indian to score a triple century in Tests after Virender Sehwag. Indian captain Virat Kohli delayed the declaration for Nair to reach the milestone. He ended up with an unbeaten 303 of 381 balls as India posted a giant 759 on the board.
