Indians head towards taking a first innings lead after a fruitful 3rd day at Chepauk scoring 331 runs in the 88 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. KL Rahul led the charge with a mammoth century, who fell one of short of a well-deserved double ton. Parthiv Patel and Karun Nair scored 71 each and put on 150+ stands with Rahul. Murali Vijay, who didn’t open due to injury, joined Nair at end of the day as England bowlers’ could sense yet another toiling tomorrow as well with India just 86 behind the visitors’ first innings total. 3 – KL Rahul and Karun Nair pair is only the 3rd Karnataka pair to put on a century stand in Tests. Their stand of 161 is the highest among the 3 beating Dravid-Srinath’s 144 vs New Zealand in 1999.

4 – KL Rahul now has 4 centuries in his 5 fifty plus scores, joint most by an Indian in his first 5 fifty plus scores. Vindo Kambli and Cheteshwar Pujara also had 4 centuries in their first 5 fifty plus scores.

5 – KL Rahul is now the 5th Indian opener to make two scores of 150+ in a calendar year in Tests. He scored 159 vs West Indies earlier this year.

6 – Rahul-Parthiv pair became the 6th Indian opening pair to put on a century stand in their first innings as a pair. Their stand of 152 is the 5th highest stand among those 6 pairs.

9 – KL Rahul became only the 9th player to get out on 199 in Tests. Two players remained unbeaten on 199. Rahul is the 2nd Indian after Mohammad Azharuddin to be dismissed on 199.

31 – Rahul-Parthiv’s stand is the first century opening stand for India in Tests in 31 innings. Last was 283 between Dhawan-Vijay in 2015 vs Bangladesh.

62.25 – Parthiv Patel’s average as an opener in Tests, the 2nd best for any Indian with a minimum of 5 innings. Cheteshwar Pujara averages 116 as an opener in this format.

71 – Runs scored by Parthiv Patel in the first innings, his highest individual score in Test cricket. Karun Nair also scored an unbeaten 71, which is also his highest in his 3-match Test career.

71 – Parthiv Patel’s 71 is the joint 4th highest total for a wicketkeeper keeping wickets for 150+ overs (or 900+ balls) and opening the innings. India’s B Kunderan scored a century, the only player to open after keeping for 150+ overs and score a ton in Tests.

199 – KL Rahul’s 199 is the 2nd highest score by an Indian opener against England in Tests. Highest is 221 by Sunil Gavaskar in 1979 at The Oval.

2006 – Last time before Rahul-Nair, two Karnataka batsmen batted together in Tests were Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble in 2006 vs West Indies at Kingston.

2009 – Last time an Indian opener scored more than KL Rahul’s 199 in Tests was 293 by Virender Sehwag in 2009 at Mumbai (BS) vs Sri Lanka.

2010 – Rahul and Parthiv scored 50+ at a strike rate over 60. The last instance of two openers scoring fifty plus at a strike rate of 60 in the same innings was Sehwag & Gautam Gambhir in 2010 against South Africa at Centurion in 3rd innings.
