India v New Zealand, 1st ODI – Statistical Highlights

After the whitewash in the Test series, India started the ODI series in style as they defeated New Zealand by 6 wickets chasing down the modest target of 191 in just 33.1 overs. After being put into bat, New Zealand were done by the pace of Hardik Pandya and Umesh Yadav.

However, the visitors managed to recover from 65/7 and managed to post 190 runs in the end. Virat Kohli continued his form with an unbeaten 85 in the chase and took team home without much ado. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the game.

0 – Number of times Hardik Pandya picked more than 2 wickets in a List A game before this ODI. He played in 17 List A games and never picked more than 2 wickets.

2 – Tim Southee became the 2nd player to score his maiden fifty in ODI cricket in his 100th ODI. Kyle Mills scored one in 2009 which was also vs India.

3/31 – Hardik Pandya’s figures of 3/31 are the 4th best figures by an Indian on ODI debut and 3rd best by a pacer.

4 – Pandya became the 4th Indian to receive a man of the match award on ODI debut. Sandeep Patil in 1980, Mohit Sharma in 2013 and KL Rahul in 2016 are the other 3.

4 – Number of Indians including Hardik Pandya who opened the bowling on ODI debut and took a wicket in first over. Aavishkar Salvi, Ashish Nehra and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are others.

5 – This is the fifth consecutive ODI in which India won and all the 5 while chasing.

9 – Tom Latham became the 9th batsman overall to carry the bat in a completed innings in ODIs. He is the first player from New Zealand.

15 – Number of times MS Dhoni got run out in ODI cricket. 14 times for India and once for Asia. Since his ODI debut, only Rahul Dravid (15) got out more times among Indians.

25 – Number of times MS Dhoni got run out in International cricket. Only 3 players got run out more often since his debut.

32 – Matches taken by Amit Mishra to complete 50 ODI wickets, fastest Indian spinner, and 4th fastest among all Indians.

48 – Score at which New Zealand lost their 5th wicket, the 2nd lowest by any team against India in India in ODIs. Zimbabwe lost their 5th wicket for 47 in 1987 at Mumbai.

55 – Tim Southee’s 55 is the highest score by a New Zealand’s no.10 and 11 batsman in ODIs. Previous best: 44* by Kyle Mills in 2004 vs Australia.

65 – Score at which New Zealand lost their 7th wicket, the lowest by any team against India in India in ODIs. Zimbabwe lost their 7th wicket for 67 in 1987 at Mumbai.

125 – Runs scored for last 3 wickets by New Zealand, most by them in an ODI. These are also the 2nd most runs scored by a team after losing 7 wickets inside 70 runs. Afghanistan scored 126 runs against Zimbabwe last year.

3360 – Runs scored by Virat Kohli in successful run-chases in ODIs. Only 6 players have scored more runs.

10013 – Number of balls MS Dhoni faced in ODI cricket. He became the 24th player to face 10000+ balls in ODIs.
