India v New Zealand, ODI series - 5 New Zealand players to watch out for

After a 3-0 drubbing in the Test series, New Zealand will now move to the limited-overs leg of their tour with some hope or resurrection. Their previous outing in India during the WorldT20 made everyone believe that. But, Kane Williamson and Co. were simply outplayed and couldn’t compete. All they could do was to fight session after session and eventually return to the pavilion with soiled shirts. Test cricket is always mentally draining. The change of format will be refreshing for the Kiwis who will be seeking to revive their fortunes with the white ball. Kane Williamson would have also come with this optimistic thought. But, as it turned out, the entire series turned out to be a disaster for him. It would be wrong to say that he failed terribly. In the first game, he made 75, then a stomach bug forced him to sit out of the second game at Kanpur. In the third Test, he made a return but failed to lift his team up. Personally, he retained some honour. But, he failed as a skipper. The upcoming ODI series will be an opportunity for him to ease the pain of the Test series and regain confidence as a captain. His exceptional tally of 10 wickets from 5 matches during the multinational tournament which included his match- winning spell of 4/11 against India was the main talking point of the tournament. This prelude made everyone be wary of the young left-arm spinners ahead of the Test series. Unfortunately, he could create an impact and ended up with 10 wickets in 3 matches as compared to the 27 wickets of Ashwin and 14 wickets of Jadeja. But, his threat cannot be written off due to below – par shows during the test series. The pitches will most likely be similar to the ones which were laid out during the World T20 and one can surely expect him to give some match winning performance. 3. Ish Sodhi: New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi. (Photo credit PRAKASH SINGH/AFP/Getty Images) Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner’s spin bowling partner, was also one of the key men on whom everybody has their eyes on. Unfortunately, he also failed to create an impact and was not required after the first Test at Kanpur. The leg-spinner was able to register figures for only 1/50 and 2/99 in the only test he was given an opportunity which his team lost an innings margin. However, as mentioned earlier for Santner, Sodhi cannot be written off that easily. He has been effective bowling in tandem with Santner. And, if the pair is given a chance together, both can be game changers without any doubt. 4. The aggressive all-rounder is a big boost to the team. Anderson, who has the highest strike rate among Black Caps in their ODI history, was unable to play the test due to the ankle injury. Anderson will add strength in both the department and should be able to play a couple of match winning knocks. His IPL experience should come handy this time. He can hope to get a good start to the series when he comes out to play at Dharamsala where the climate and the playing condition are more like home. 5. Anton Devcich: New Zealand cricketer Anton Devcich. (Photo credit AAMIR QURESHI/AFP/Getty Images) Anton Devcich may not very familiar name but the all-rounder will be one of the key men ahead of the limited overs series. His ODI stats aren’t great. in an injury-plagued career with his last outing back in December 2014, Devcich has played only 10 ODI and has only 177 runs at an average of averages just 19.96 in ODIs with a high score of 58. But, he is a far better cricketer than what the stats show. But a solid one-day campaign for the Northern Knights – he made 368 runs at an average of 52.57, including four half-centuries . In July and August, he played for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League and brushed up his all rounder skills on the slow pitches. The Black Caps can certainly pace their bets on him to upset India.
