India vs Australia 2019, 1st ODI – Statistical Highlights

India got back into winning ways against Australia as they bounced back from the T20I series defeat with a clinical win in the first game of the 5-match ODI series. A collective effort from the Indian bowlers restricted the Aussies to 236/7, who won the toss and elected to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli put on a 76-run stand for the 2nd wicket before they lost 3/19 in space of 40 deliveries. However, Kedar Jadhav (81*) and MS Dhoni (59*) added 141 runs for the 5th wicket by scoring unbeaten fifties as India chased down the target with ten deliveries to spare.

India ends its hoodoo in Hyderabad:

1 – India defeated Australia for the first time in an ODI at the RGIC Stadium in Hyderabad. India lost to the Aussies in 2007 and 2009 respectively also while chasing a total.

236/7 – Australia’s total of 236/7 is the lowest first innings total in the ODIs at the RGICS in Hyderabad. The batting first sides posted 240+ in the previous six ODI matches here.

Dhoni-Jadhav saves the day for India:

141* – The unbeaten 141-run stand between MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav is India’s 2nd highest partnership in ODI cricket for 5th or lower wicket while chasing at home. Jadhav was involved in a 200-run stand with Virat Kohli during the 2017 Pune ODI against England.

During the 2009 ODI against Australia in Hyderabad, the pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Suresh Raina added 137 also for the 5th wicket. India ended up losing that game by a 3-run margin.

237 – India’s chase of 237 is their highest successful chase in ODI cricket without any of their top three scoring a fifty since their 288-run chase against Zimbabwe in the 2015 CWC. In this span, India won only three other ODIs without a half-century from their top three.

List A records for Kohli and Dhoni:

248 – Innings Virat Kohli needed for completing 12000 runs in List A cricket. Kohli is the 50th player to achieve this milestone and the fastest to get there. The previous quickest to this milestone was Michael Bevan in 297 innings.

Matthew Hayden is the 3rd quickest having taken 299 innings. Hayden got there in his final ODI innings; which was also his last appearance in List A cricket.

13054 – MS Dhoni completed 13000 runs in List A cricket in this game. The keeper-batsman is the 36th player and only the 4th Indian to reach the milestone. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly are the other three players from India with 13000+ List A runs.

A blob in the milestone game:

3 – Aaron Finch became only the 3rd Australian and the 17th player overall to bag a duck in the 100th game of ODI career. Dean Jones and Craig McDermott are the other two Aussie players with a duck in their 100th ODI match.

A rare dismissal for Virat:

20 – For the first time in 20 International innings, Virat Kohli has been dismissed other than “caught out”. In his previous 19 innings across all formats, Kohli remained unbeaten on three instances and was dismissed “caught out” in other 16 innings. Kohli was dismissed in this fashion in 14 consecutive innings before his unbeaten innings in the Bangalore T20I.

Taking the first strike:

100 – This game was the 100th instance of Rohit Sharma taking the first strike for India in an ODI game. He is 15th player and the 3rd Indian to take the first strike on 100 or more instances in ODI cricket. Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag are the other two Indians to take the first strike 100 or more times in ODI cricket.
