India vs Australia: Selectors to pick the T20I and ODI squad this week
A few of the senior players are likely to be rested for the series.
After a gruelling Trans-Tasman tour, Team India is currently having a small break after which they will be facing Australia for the two T20Is and five ODIs. The tour will commence on February 24 with the T20 Internationals and the selectors will get together to pick the squad for both the series on February 15. The workload management of the players will be in prime focus during the squad selection.
The rotation system will be opted to rest the players it seems and accordingly, Rohit Sharma looks the likeliest candidate to get a break this time around. Virat Kohli was rested for the last two ODIs and the T20I series against New Zealand and it remains to be seen who will be in line this time.
Composition of the team shouldn’t be affected
‘Workload management of the senior players will definitely be the main area of discussion as we all know that the Indians have been on the road and the selectors and team management have made a conscious effort to ensure that the players get ample rest between games and series. Like you saw, regular skipper Virat Kohli was rested for the back end of the New Zealand series. You might see Rohit Sharma rested for some games here,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Times Now.
“But it is also important to note that the Indians would want to keep the foot on the pedal and ensure that they don’t give the Australians any momentum going into the World Cup. A good series against India would mean a confidence booster for the team. So, there has to be a balance so that the composition of the team is not affected,” the source further said.
While the T20I series concludes on February 8, the five-match ODI series commences on March 2 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
