India vs Australia: Virat Kohli outraged at the DRS after Mohali loss

The Decision Review System (DRS) is once grabbing the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The ongoing series between India and Australia has seen quite a number of controversial decisions. In the third ODI in Ranchi, Australia skipper Aaron Finch was trapped by Kuldeep Yadav. After being given out, Finch reviewed the decision and replays caused a big controversy. The ball tracking appeared to show two different balls on the same ball-tracking display.

The DRS was at it again in the fourth ODI and India skipper Virat Kohli could not stop himself from questioning the consistency of the technology. Kohli was referring to the incident that took place in the 44th over of Australia’s innings. Rishabh Pant had reviewed a caught-behind shout when Ashton Turner was on 41. There was a clear spike on Snicko but it came after the ball passed the bat.

But the Snicko had shown lighter disturbances even before the ball reached the batsman as well. With no conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field decision, the third-umpire gave his decision in favour of the batsman. And it proved costly for Team India as Turner went on to slam an unbeaten 84 off just 43 balls to help Australia chase down an improbable 359. With the win, Australia drew level in the five-match series.

“The DRS call was a surprise, it’s just not consistent at all, it’s becoming a talking point in every game,” said Kohli after the four-wicket loss in Mohali. “We were sloppy in the field and should’ve grabbed our chances,” added the India skipper.

Kohli credits Australia

While Kohli was definitely angry with DRS, he took nothing away from the visitors and praised them for their fine display with the bat. “The wicket remained good throughout, we’ve fallen on the wrong side of the dew in two games, but that’s not an excuse. Ashton played a hell of a knock, Peter Handscomb played a brilliant inning, Usman Khawaja held the innings together.”

“They played better cricket, we got to accept and it’s a record chase, they deserved to win. If we had won the toss, we would’ve batted first (in Ranchi). We had to get the fifth bowler out of the way tonight. If Kedar Jadhav and Vijay Shankar was bowling with the dew, it would’ve been more difficult, so we wanted to get done with it first,” said Kohli.

Peter Handscomb hit his maiden century and added 192 runs with Usman Khawaja (91) to set the platform for an exciting finish before Turner turned the game on its head. The fifth and final game will take place on March 13 at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi.
