As far as the shortest format is concerned, India have not been taking the best of the calls in recent times.

Shreyas Gopal is yet another youngster who is really unlucky to not get an opportunity in the T20 side of India. The leg-spinner has been the best Indian spinner in the Indian Premier League since IPL 2017. Playing for Rajasthan Royals, Gopal snared 31 wickets with a bowling average of less than 19 in 24 innings. He took only about 3 overs to pick a wicket and conceded less than 8 runs per over, in this period.

The 26-year-old has already proved his mettle on the Indian pitches against top-class batsmen in the IPL and can be a reliable option for the flat decks of Australia in the mega tournament. The wrist spinners have been doing well in the limited-overs cricket of late because of their variations, which batsmen often fail to pick. Gopal too has enough variations in his armoury with Googly being his main weapon. However, he was not having a good time in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but it is a different format.

Recently, India have been looking for bowlers who can bat a bit when required. And, probably, they won’t find a better option than Shreyas Gopal for that role. The right-handed batsman can make handy contributions in the lower-order. His batting strike rate of about 137 in IPL 2019; and a batting average of over 35 with the highest score being 150 in the First-Class cricket are enough to tell the tale. Gopal is definitely worth a go in T20 cricket in the Indian team.
