India vs England, 2021: 1st Test, Day 2 - Joe Root's double ton, England's record total, India's no-ball woes and more stats

England piled on the runs on the second day of the ongoing first Test against India in Chennai. Skipper Joe Root slammed a sensational double-hundred and Ben Stokes’ 82 propelled the visitors to 555/8 at the end of Day 2 as they have now batted for a whopping 180 overs. For India, all the front-line bowlers apart from Washington Sundar picked up two wickets each and they looked extremely tired as England plan to bat on even on the third day.

Here are all the statistical highlights from Day 2 of the first Test between India and England:

A day of records for Joe Root

1 – Joe Root became the first player to score a double century in his 100th Test. 184 was the previous highest score in the milestone Test which was scored by Inzamam-ul-Haq also against India in the 2005 Bangalore Test.

1 – Joe Root became the first England player to cross the 200-run mark with a six.

1 – Joe Root also became the first batsman to score a double century against India in Test since Brendon McCullum’s 302 in the 2014 Wellington Test. The England captain is also the first to cross the magical 200-run mark in India since McCullum’s 225 in 2010 Hyderabad Test match.

2 – Joe Root is also the first England batsman to score multiple 200s in Tests in Asia.

2 – Joe Root is only the second captain to notch up three consecutive 150+ scores in three consecutive. Sir Don Bradman achieved this feat in 1937.

2 – Root’s last three scores in international cricket read – 228, 186 and 218. He is only the second player to register scores in excess of 180 in three consecutive Test matches. The first to do so was Kumar Sangakkara in 2007.

218 – Joe Root was dismissed on 218 in the first innings which is the second-highest score by a visiting captain in India in Tests. Clive Lloyd scored 242* in the 1975 Wankhede Test which is still the highest.

The England skipper, with his 218-run knock, also went past Mike Gatting (207) to record the highest individual score from England batsman in India.

3 – Joe Root has now scored three double-centuries away from home (in New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India). Stephen Fleming also notched up three 200+ scores while playing away from home in the longest format of the game. Graeme Smith owns this record with four double tons away from home in the Test format.

India finally concede 500+ runs at home

555/8 – England ended Day 2 at 555/8 and look set to continue batting on the third day as well. This is the first time India conceded more than 500 runs in a Test at home since 2016. England only was the last team to notch up more than 500 runs (537 all out) in the 2016 Rajkot Test.

A tiring day for India

180 – India have so far bowled 180 overs in the first innings of the Chennai Test. These are the most number of overs India bowled in a Test innings since 2014 Wellington Test (New Zealand’s 2nd innings – 210 overs). This is also the most the hosts have bowled in India since the 2011 Mumbai Test (West Indies 1st innings – 184.1 overs).

Ravi Ashwin’s first no-ball in Tests

20614 – Ravi Ashwin bowled the first no-ball of his Test career after delivering 20614 balls. He crossed the line while bowling at Joe Root in his 38th over of the innings.

Indian bowlers’ cross the line

19 – India have so far bowled 19 no-balls in England’s first innings. These are the most by them in a Test innings since 2009 (21 in Sri Lanka’s 1st innings in Ahmedabad) and the most by any team since 2014 (21 by Sri Lanka in Bangladesh’s 1st innings in Chattogram).
