The Indian team has been defeated on their home soil by England in the first Test of the 4-match test series. On the fifth day of the first Test being played at Chepauk, India were bowled out for 192 runs in the fourth innings chasing a huge target of 420 runs. England won the match by 227 runs. Indian captain Virat Kohli scored a half-century for India, but it was not enough to save the defeat. Virat played an innings of 72 runs off 104 balls including 9 fours. 

For England, Jack Leach and James Anderson were the most successful bowlers. Anderson picked up important wickets of Ajinkya Rahane, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant. England have now taken a lead of 1-0 in the Test series. The second Test of the series will be played from 13th February at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

England at the top

1- England team have grabbed the top spot in the ongoing World Test Championship after winning the first Test. Indian team who were on the first spot before the start of the match, have now slipped down to the fourth spot. England have 70.2 percentage points while India have 68.3 percentage points.


India falter at home

5 – This was India’s just the fifth loss at home since 2010. They had not lost any Test match at home since the Pune Test against Australia in 2017 before this match.

22 – India have lost a match at Chepauk after a long gap of 22 years. They last lost a Test at this stadium against Pakistan in the year 1999.


England’s stunning record in Asia

6 – England won their sixth consecutive match in Asia. They have won all their Test matches in Asia since 2018. Three of these wins have come in the year 2021.

4 – This was the fourth win for the England team in India since 2000. They have won joint-most matches along with Australia and South Africa in India since 2000.


Anderson achieves a new milestone

343 – James Anderson surpassed Courtney Walsh in terms of taking most Test wickets among pacers after the age of 30. He has picked 343 wickets in Test cricket after turning 30. He has left behind Walsh in this record who had 341 wickets after the age of 30 years.


Record for captain Joe Root

26 – Joe Root became joint-most successful captain for England in Test cricket. Root now has 26 Test wins as captain, and he has equalled Michael Vaughan in the record.


Milestones for captain Virat Kohli

4 – Virat Kohli is now on the fourth spot in terms of scoring most Test runs as a captain. Virat has scored 5303 Test runs as captain, and he has surpassed Clive Lloyd who had 5233 runs as Test captain.

1 – Virat Kohli became the first Indian captain to score a half-century in the fourth innings of a Test match at Chepauk. He also registered the second-highest score by any captain playing at Chepauk in the fourth innings.

4 – India lost their fourth consecutive Test match under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. Two of these losses have come against New Zealand, while England and Australia have won one match each. Overall, India have won 33 Test matches under the captaincy of Virat Kohli in 57 matches with 14 losses and 10 draw matches.
