India’s young all-rounder Washington Sundar is just playing the 2nd Test match of his life and has already grabbed too much limelight and praises due to his sheer class. Sundar marked his debut in Gabba and scored crucial 62 runs in the first innings when India was struggling at 161/5. He also took three wickets in the same innings followed by one more in the subsequent one. His magnificent six under pressure situation in Gabba looked too impressive and talked volumes of his talent.
Keeping in line with his spectacular performance, he was selected for England series, and he proved his mettle yet again in the first innings. When India was reeling at 221 runs after the loss of six wickets, Sundar provided a ray of hope by scoring stunning 85* after the departure of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant. His great sense of calmness and composure during crunch situations became a thing to watch out for.
Talking about Sundar’s father, M Sundar, he turned all the heads when he expressed his agitation on Sundar missing his century at the Gabba. In the latest turn of events, he has revealed the mystery behind his son’s name. He named his son after a former army man PD Washington who was extremely fond of cricket.
Why M Sundar named his son as Washington Sundar?
“I am a Hindu and come from a very humble family. Two streets away from my home in Triplicane lived an ex-army man called PD Washington. Washington was extremely fond of cricket and would come to watch us play at the Marina ground. He took a liking for my game,” said M Sundar as quoted by the Twelfth Man Times.
Sundar’s father added that he didn’t have money to buy any books or pay his school fees, and PD Washington gave him all the financial support. While the army man took his last breath in the year 1999, Sundar was born, and his father decided to name him Washington instead of Srinivasan.
“As per the Hindu custom, I whispered a God’s name, ‘Srinivasan,’ in his ear. But I decided to name him Washington in memory of the man who had done so much for me,” M Sundar concluded.
