India pacer Mohammed Shami got the better of an in-form Cheteshwar Pujara during a four-day practice match ahead of the rescheduled fifth Test that will be played between India and England in Edgbaston from July 1. The duo was against each other as Pujara is representing Leicestershire County Cricket Club.
Both Shami and Pujara will be playing for the same team in a week’s time, but on this occasion, it was Shami who succeeded in deceiving the Gujarat batter who has made a tremendous impact on the English soil in the County season.
Mohammed Shami deceives Cheteshwar Pujara
On the second day of the practice match in Leicester, Shami charged in and bowled one well outside the off-stump, which angled in after pitching. While Pujara attempted to cut it through the off-side, he failed to connect as the ball took the inside edge of the bat and went on to shatter the stumps. Both Shami and India celebrated as Pujara took a long walk back to the pavilion. The video was posted by Leicestershire Foxes on their official Twitter handle.

Coming back to the four-day match, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. None of the batters could offer much resistance from the visitors’ side as they eventually went on to declare their innings at 246/8. Wicketkeeper-batter Srikar Bharat top-scored with an unbeaten 70, whereas the likes of Rohit and Virat Kohli could only manage scores of 25 and 33 respectively.
In reply, Leicester have lost their top order and reached 110/4. Pujara failed to trouble the scorers as his stay in the middle only lasted for six deliveries. Meanwhile, the Indian team would be hoping to get into the groove ahead of the Edgbaston Test as they look forward to winning their first Test series in England after the 2007-08 season. The series is currently 2-1 in India’s favour.
