The opening T20I between India and New Zealand on Wednesday, November 17, turned out to be a closely-fought affair. In the end, after loads of twists and turns, the Men in Blue won by five wickets with two balls left at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The Black Caps, led by Tim Southee, fought until the very last over, but couldn’t get over the finish line in the humdinger.

Martin Guptill takes charge

After winning the toss and opting to field first, India got off to a stupendous start as Bhuvneshwar Kumar got rid of Daryl Mitchell, who bagged a golden duck. From there on, Mark Chapman and Martin Guptill took charge and helped the Black Caps score 41 runs in the powerplay. The duo carried on and put on a partnership of 109 runs for the second wicket off a mere 12.5 overs.

Chapman notched his maiden half-century for the Kiwis off 45 balls to show his mettle. The southpaw fell prey to Ravi Ashwin, who also sent back Glenn Phillips for a duck. Guptill, at the other end, scored at a run-a-ball for his first 20 balls after which he stepped on the gas. The veteran scored 70 off 42 with three fours and four sixes, helping his team post a formidable score of 164 for six.

Rohit, Suryakumar make hay

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul took India off to a stupendous start as they stitched together a 50-run stand off 5.1 overs. Rahul smashed a four and a six to score 15 before Mitchell Santner accounted for his wicket. India scored 56 runs in the powerplay and brought the required run-rate down to 7.71. At the half-way mark, the Men in Blue found themselves in command, having scored 85 runs.

Suryakumar Yadav joined him and carried on the good work. After a 59-run stand between the duo, Trent Boult dismissed Rohit, who scored 48 off 36 with five fours and two sixes. Yadav, in the meantime, got to his fifty off 34 balls with a six off Lockie Ferguson. He became Boult’s second victim after scoring 62 off 40. Rishabh Pant smashed Mitchell for a four downtown to take India home.
