India vs New Zealand, 1st Test, Day 2 Stats Review: Shreyas Iyer's century on debut, Tim Southee's feat and other stats
Shreyas Iyer became 16th Indian player to register a ton on Test debut.
Shreyas Iyer, playing in his first Test, entered the record books as he registered a century (105) on the second day of the first Test against New Zealand in Kanpur. Starting the day at his overnight score of 75, Iyer brought up his ton before falling to Tim Southee, who claimed a fifer including the wickets of Ravindra Jadeja, Wriddhiman Saha, and Axar Patel on Day two morning. Notably, Shreyas Iyer became the 16th Indian player to score a Test century on debut and sixth batter in the 21st century.
Tim Southee bagged a fifer, 13th of his Test career, equaling him with Chris Cairns who had also taken as many five-wicket hauls. Though Day 2 was completely dominated by Kiwi openers Tom Latham and Will Young, who stitched an unbeaten century stand, their highest against India in India since 2010. Both New Zealand openers scored half-centuries as Indian bowlers were made to struggle for a wicket. Will Young, playing his first Test in India, was quite impressive with his shot selections and composing technique. It was also Blackcaps first-century opening stand in Tests in 2021.
The well set Kiwi duo would like to continue scoring more runs on Day 3 morning to put their side in a commanding position. They have already laid a solid platform for the experienced Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor to come and carry forward the start. The attractive right-handed batter Will Young (75) would be looking to get to the three-figure mark, which would be his first in just the fourth Test. Tom Latham, who has never scored a Test ton against India, would also be itching to get to that landmark.
