The history and political tension between India (IND) and Pakistan (PAK) may have resulted in no bilateral series of late but that didn’t stop it from being termed the greatest rivalry of the sport. Once part of undivided India, the set of players played a lot of cricket together in various parts of the world but after the partition in 1947, the country got divided into two halves and that’s when the rivalry formed. Amidst a lot of heat and tension, three players in history - Gul Mohammad, Amir Elahi and Pakistan’s first-ever captain Abdul Hafeez Kardar managed to play for both nations in their respective careers.
The first match between these two nations was played in the year 1952 in Delhi. Since then, 206 more international matches have been played between them in which Pakistan is currently leading with 88 wins while India has 74 wins to their name. The rest of the matches either ended on level terms or no result was concluded. In the very first (Test) match, Lala Amarnath and his boys managed to strike first and beat Pakistan by an innings and 70 runs.
Two of the greatest and fiercest rivals met each other on October 14th, 2023 in match No. 12 of the sixteenth edition of the World Cup at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad where the home side defeated their arch rivals comfortably and convincingly by a margin of seven wickets. Batting first, the Men in Green hot bundled out cheaply for just 191 in 42.5 overs as five Indian bowlers picked up two wickets each. In reply, skipper Rohit Sharma struck 86 as the home nation reached the target with ease in 30.3 overs. With that, India registered their eighth victory in eight matches against Pakistan in the ODI World Cups.
