Despite being omitted from India’s T20I squad for the five-match series against New Zealand, Samson was later included as a replacement to the injured Shikhar Dhawan who was ruled out of the entire tour. After warming the bench in the first three matches, the wicketkeeper-batsman managed just ten runs upon making the XI in the remaining two fixtures.

The 25-year-old did not make the cut for the ODIs against Blackcaps despite Dhawan and Rohit’s absence as the management preferred Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw for the 50-over format. The Rajasthan Royals player has been consistent in the IPL for the past several seasons apart from scoring heavily for Kerala in the domestic tournaments.

Samson who holds the record for the highest List A score in Indian domestic cricket and the highest List A score by a wicketkeeper in the world having amassed 212* off just 129 balls in 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy has the temperament to succeed at the biggest stage. Hope he gets his much-deserved chances going forward to prove his credentials!
