Another day and another win for Team India! The Men in Blue have now played eight T20Is following their early exit in the T20 World Cup last year and emereged winners every single time. As India thrashed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second T20I, the Men in Blue also seal the three-match series 2-0. Although the visitors did put up a great fight in Dharamsala, Rohit Sharma’s team won pretty comfortably at the end.
Having recorded a clear and comfortable win in the first match, Indian skipper Rohit won the toss and fielded the same playing XI again. Though Sri Lanka started extremely slow, their opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and Dasun Shanaka picked the pace later and shared a fifty partnership. Indian bowlers tried to pull things back, taking four quick wickets. However, they couldn’t get the rid of Pathum Nissanka, who was on a roll. Settled Nissanka then shared a 58-run partnership with skipper Dasun Shanaka in just 20 balls, as Sri Lanka get to 183/5.
Coming to the chase, India lost their captain Rohit in the first over and Ishan Kishan couldn’t do much either. At this stage, the target looked mountainous. However, a brilliant knock of 74* in just 44 balls from Shreyas Iyer, with great support from Sanju Samson and Ravindra Jadeja helped India chase the target down. Not just they could chased the total that looked tough at one stage, but they crossed the line with nearly three overs to spare. Sri Lankan bowlers, who were brilliant in the initial overs, lost the momentum later, and India took full use of it.
Here’s a look at the important stats from the match:
75 – Runs scored by Pathum Nissanka, which is now the highest by a Sri Lankan opener against India in T20Is. Previous highest was 61 by Tillakaratne Dilshan at Colombo in 2009.
5 – Fifty-plus scores by Pathum Nissanka in T20Is, which is the highest by a Sri Lankan since his debut in March 2021. Charith Asalanka has three, and no one else has more than one.
