India vs West Indies, 2019: 2nd ODI – Rohit’s record hundred, Kuldeep’s hat-trick, Iyer-Pant's cameos, Golden ducks for captains and more stats

India levelled the 3-match ODI series against West Indies with a huge 107-run win in the crucial 2nd ODI hosted by Vizag. The opening pair of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma shared a 227-run stand for the first wicket in 37 overs. Rahul got out after scoring 102 from 104 balls while Rohit reached 159 from only 138 deliveries before getting dismissed.

Cameos from Shreyas Iyer (53 off 32 balls) and Rishabh Pant (39 from 16 balls) powered India to 387/5 in 50 overs. The West Indies chase was all about the dangerous partnership between Shai Hope (78 off 88) and Nicholas Pooran (75 off 47). The duo added 106 in only 80 balls for the 4th wicket but the visitors were bowled out for 280 in 43.3 overs.

End of streaks of both teams:

4 – The 107-run win in Vizag brought an end to India’s 4-match losing streak in ODI cricket at home; their joint-longest losing streak in home ODIs since 1990. India lost four successive ODIs at home in 2006 as well.

4 – The Vizag ODI defeat put an end to West Indies’ longest winning streak in ODI cricket since the start of 2015. They won each of their last four ODIs; a streak that began in the series against Afghanistan last month.

Rohit’s record knock:

1 – Rohit Sharma became the first opening batsman in International cricket to smash 10 centuries in a calendar year. He is also the first player to smash centuries against seven different oppositions in a year.

A high-scoring match:

29 – As many as 29 sixes were hit during the Vizag ODI – 16 by India and 13 by West Indies. These are the 2nd most number of sixes hit during an ODI match hosted by India. The highest is 38 sixes during the 2013 Bangalore ODI between India and Australia.

667 – A total of 667 runs were scored by both the teams on Wednesday. These are now the 2nd most runs amassed during an India-West Indies ODI match. The 2011 ODI in Indore witnessed a match aggregate of 683 where India posted 418/5 with help of Virender Sehwag’s record-breaking 219.

A tough match for the captains:

1 – For the first time in ODI history, both the captains in a match bagged golden ducks. Overall, this is the 12th instance of both the captains getting out for a duck in an ODI but the first to be hosted by India.

Hat-tricks galore for Kuldeep Yadav:

1 – Kuldeep Yadav became the first Indian to take multiple hat-tricks in International cricket. The chinaman spinner bagged a hat-trick in the 2017 Kolkata ODI against Australia.

6 – Kuldeep is only the 6th player to take multiple hat-tricks in ODI cricket. Lasith Malinga claimed three ODI hat-tricks while Wasim Akram, Saqlain Mushtaq, Chaminda Vaas and Trent Boult have two hat-tricks apiece in this format.

4 – India had four players taking a hat-trick in International cricket in 2019 – Jasprit Bumrah in Tests; Deepak Chahar in T20Is; Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav in ODIs. No other team had more than two players taking an International hat-trick in a calendar year.

The record stand:

227 – Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul is only the 2nd Indian pair to share a double century opening stand in ODIs on Indian soil. Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane put on a 231-run stand for the first wicket in the 2014 Cuttack ODI against Sri Lanka.

227 – The 227-run stand by Rohit-Rahul pair is the first 200-run opening stand for India in ODIs against West Indies. This is also the 2nd highest opening partnership by any pair against West Indies in ODI cricket. Rilee Rossouw and Hashim Amla shared 247 in the 2015 Johannesburg ODI for the first wicket.

Pant and Iyer’s blitz to finish:

18.25 – The pair of Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer added 73 from only 24 balls for the 4th wicket. Their partnership run rate of 18.25 is the 3rd best in any 50+ partnership in ODI cricket where balls data is known.

AB de Villiers and Farhaan Behardien added an unbeaten 80-run stand in 20 balls at an RR of 24 also against West Indies in the 2015 CWC. During the 2011 World Cup match against Pakistan, the New Zealand pair of Ross Taylor and Jacob Oram had a run rate of 23.18 during their partnership of 85 from 22 balls.

28 – Shreyas Iyer alone scored 28 runs from the five balls he faced in the 47th over of the innings bowled by Roston Chase. Iyer struck sixes on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th balls and a four on the 4th delivery of the over.

These are the most number of runs by any Indian in an over in ODI cricket. Virender Sehwag in the bowling of Dilhara Lokuhettige during the 2005 Tri-Series Final against Sri Lanka and Rohit Sharma off Xavier Doherty in the 2013 Bangalore ODI against Sri Lanka hit 26 sixes in an over.

31 – A total of 31 runs came from the 47th over bowled by Roston Chase; the most runs scored by India in an over in ODI cricket. The previous most by 28 runs by Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja against New Zealand in the bowling of Chris Drum during the 1999 Hyderabad ODI.
