Team India continued their merry run at home with yet another emphatic win over the Windies side. After a thoroughly dominant performance in the Test series, the hosts powered home by 8 wickets in the first ODI of the 5-match series. After a lacklustre show in the Tests, the Windies side hope for a change in fortune with a more preferred format on the cards.

Much to their liking, they did manage to put up a fight with the bat in the match played at Guwahati. However, their bowlers let them down. Having lost the toss, Windies were asked to bat first. Riding on Shimron Hetmyer’s thundering 106, and handy contributions from Kieran Powell and Jason Holder, Windies managed to score 322/8 in their stipulated 50 overs.

In the run chase, they were blown away by the two mighty men of the Indian top order – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. After losing Shikhar Dhawan early on in the game, Virat and Rohit stitched a marathon 246 run stand for the second wicket to set the base for a very successful run chase. After Virat’s departure, Rohit ensured that he stayed till the very end to see India home by 8 wickets.

Here are the India Player Ratings for the match:

Shikhar Dhawan – 1/10

After missing out on his place in the Indian Test side, Shikhar Dhawan had a point to prove in the limited overs cricket. He was expected to continue his good run of form in white ball cricket and pick things up from where he had left in the Asia Cup this year. The southpaw had a silent start to the series as he chopped one on his stumps early on in the chase to perish for 4.

Rohit Sharma – 9.5/10

Rohit Sharma played a whirlwind knock of unbeaten 152 to anchor the Indian run chase. Rohit added 246 runs with Virat Kohli to push Windies out of the game. Rohit was content in playing the supporting role early on in the game when Virat Kohli was going all guns blazing. He soon got into his own groove to notch up his 20th ODI century. Rohit smacked 15 fours and 8 sixes in the 117 deliveries that he faced for his unbeaten 152.

Virat Kohli – 9.5/10

Indian skipper Virat Kohli made a comeback to the ODI cricket in the game. Kohli had opted for rest in India’s previous ODI assignment, the Asia Cup. Kohli made a thundering comeback to his favorite format of the game. The Indian captain mustered his 36th ODI ton and played a top knock.

This was his first ODI ton at home this year. He scored 140 off 107 deliveries with 21 boundaries and 2 sixes. He was stumped off the bowling of Devendra Bishoo in his attempt to slog and finish off the game in a hurry.

Ambati Rayudu – 7/10

Prior to the commencement of the game, Virat Kohli had backed Ambati Rayudu as the solution to India’s number 4 conundrum. Rayudu did not get a lot of time at the crease in the game but did manage to show decent form in the limited time he had at the crease. The veteran batsman remained unbeaten on 22 off 26 balls and played the second fiddle to Rohit Sharma as India eased past the target with 8 wickets in hand.

Rishabh Pant – Not assigned

Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant made his ODI debut in the game. Pant did not have a major role to play in the match as his services with the bat were not needed by the team in the run chase.

MS Dhoni – 6/10

Veteran campaigner MS Dhoni had a decent start to the series. His services with the bat were not needed in the match. Behind the stumps, Dhoni fared decently well. He pocketed the catch of Shai Hope off the bowling of Mohammed Shami. Also, his inputs from behind the stumps were key to the way the spinners bowled in the game.

Ravindra Jadeja – 6/10

Ravindra Jadeja managed to keep his spot in the Indian lineup for this game. A lot of cricket pundits looked perplexed at the start of the game with the selection of Jadeja ahead of Kuldeep Yadav. Jadeja had his opportunity to seize the stage, but could not do it the way it was expected from him.

He finished with figures of 2/66 in 10 overs. He seemed to be having an off day but he managed to pull things back for himself with two wickets in the late overs. This included the wicket of centurion Shimron Hetmyer.

Umesh Yadav – 4/10

Umesh Yadav has had a stellar run of form across the three formats of the game in the recent months. However, in this game, he looked a little off shade. Umesh failed to probe the Windies batters and that saw him run wicketless in the match. In the 10 overs that he bowled, he gave away 64 runs.

Mohammed Shami – 3.5/10

Mohammed Shami provided the early breakthrough for team India. He dismissed Chandrapaul Hemraj in the 5th over of the game. After this moment of success, Shami largely faced the heat of the Windies batters. He leaked 81 runs in his quota of 10 overs. With figures of 2/81, he became the Indian bowler to have conceded the most number of runs in an ODI fixture against Windies in the history of the game.

Yuzvendra Chahal – 9/10

Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of the Indian bowlers on the day. Chahal scalped 3/41 in the 10 overs that he bowled. Chahal, sans the service of his fellow partner in crime Kuldeep Yadav, had a big role to play in the game as the frontline spinner. He did not disappoint either. He accounted for the wicket of veteran campaigner Marlon Samuels. Later, he took the wickets of Jason Holder and Ashley Nurse.

Khaleel Ahmed – 4/10

Young pace bowler Khaleel Ahmed managed to retain his place in the Indian squad after his decent maiden outing in the national colors a month ago. The wily pacer had made his debut for the Indian side in the Asia Cup 2018. Coming in to the series, he certainly has high hopes of performing well in order to sustain in the highly competitive Indian pace bowling line up.

Much against his expectations, Khaleel proved to be a costly deal on the day for the hosts. He returned with figures of 1/64 in the 10 overs that he bowled. On a positive note, he took the big wicket of Kieran Powell, who looked in a threatening form in the first hour of the play.
