India vs Windies: Aakash Chopra evaluates Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah's return in the ODI squad
He also wonders if Shami's place in the World Cup squad next year is confirmed or not.
After the first couple of matches in Guwahati and Visakhapatnam, India are currently leading the five-match series 1-0. The home team’s batting has been top-notch, but their bowling has come under the pump as the Caribbean team managed to breach the 300-run mark on both the instances. While they got away in the first match, the Windies didn’t allow them a win in the second encounter.
In the meantime, they called up Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, two of their most successful limited-overs bowlers in the last couple of years. In the meantime, Aakash, current commentator, and former Indian batsman mentioned the reasons behind calling up the speedsters for the last three one-dayers in Pune, Mumbai, and Thiruvananthapuram respectively.
Between Shami and Umesh, it was 50-50
“Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah’s return highlights that the selectors want them to play some matches. The Indian team management must be worried for the reason that the Windies have racked up 300 plus runs on both instances and won’t want the same to happen time and again. The Windies batsmen fired well and hence the best bowlers have been brought in,” he mentioned in his show AakashVani.
India also made a few alterations, one of them was leaving out pacer Mohammed Shami and retaining Umesh Yadav. Chopra believes that their selection was equivalent to a lottery. Moreover, he also wonders if Shami’s place in the World Cup squad next year is confirmed or not.
“Between Shami and Umesh, it was 50-50. Shami did well in the second match while Umesh performed decently in the first match and therefore, it was like a coin-toss and eventually Shami was rested. But if he has been rested, then that means that his place is confirmed for the World Cup as he won’t get to play much from now on,” he added.
After the conclusion of the ODI series, the Men in Blue are scheduled to play three T20Is against the Windies, starting November 4 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Lucknow and Chennai are the venues for the remaining two 20-overs fixtures.
