India vs Windies: Ian Bishop lauds Prithvi Shaw's hunger for more runs
Shaw bagged the Man of the Series award in his debut series.
Former Windies fast bowler Ian Bishop was all praises for Prithvi Shaw after he expressed a hunger to achieve a lot more for Team India. Shaw made his international and Test debut in the first Test against the Windies at Rajkot. He announced himself in sizzling fashion, with a quicker-than-run-a-ball century in his very first Test appearance. His innings of 134 was laced with 19 exquisite boundaries. The youngster’s knock set the tone for India to pile up a massive total of 639 in the first innings.
When the two teams met at Hyderabad for the second and final Test, the 18-year old once again scored more than 100 runs in the match. He was also able to see India through to an emphatic ten-wicket victory, scoring the winning runs himself. Having amassed a total of 237 runs in 3 appearances, Prithvi Shaw was adjudged Man of the Series. The youngster has almost certainly booked himself a flight to Australia for India’s four-match Test series which gets underway in December.
Strive to be the best among the best
However, the youngster is clearly hungry for more, and the fact that he bagged a Man of the Series award in his debut series is only a first step in what should be a long and illustrious career. After having accepted the award, the teenager batsman took to Twitter to say, “Just reaching here is never going to be Enough… To be the Best among the best is what I always strive for #manoftheseries #champions”
In response to Shaw’s tweet, Ian Bishop wrote, “That is what I want to hear from a young player. I pray he achieves his desired goals. #AMBITION”
Prithvi Shaw had earlier led India U19 to a world cup victory in New Zealand, following which he was fast-tracked to the India A side. He impressed selectors when touring England, which led to a national call-up during India’s five-match Test series in England.
Although he watched the final two Tests from the dressing room, Shaw was given an opportunity to open the innings for India during the Windies series, and he grabbed it with both hands. The youngster’s techniques have already drawn parallels with former greats Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Brian Lara.
