After a wait that lasted quite a long time, Mayank Agarwal finally got a call-up from the national side for the 2-match Test series against the Windies. It has been a very tough emotional road for the Karnataka batsman, who according to many has been one of the two best domestic players in recent years alongside Hanuma Vihari.

As many can imagine, it was a big day for him and his family. In an interview with Indian Express, the 26-year-old spoke at length about the way he’s feeling currently. There is a good chance that he might get to make his debut in this series as Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay didn’t feature in the squad list announced by BCCI.

He said it felt really good and although he had received an information about his selection prior to the official announcement, he said he was waiting for a confirmation to reveal to his family. He said that his mother got very emotional after listening to the news.

“I switched on news channel and saw it on TV. Acha laga (Felt good) but the problem is that my phone has not stopped ringing. Actually, our coach (BP XI) Abhay Sharma had told me earlier but I waited for a confirmation. I’m looking forward to the Test series. I spoke to my parents, my mother wasn’t able to control her emotions,” Agarwal said.

Thanked Vinay Kumar for backing me: Mayank

A couple of years ago, a string of low scores saw Mayank Agarwal on the cusp of getting discarded by the Karnataka selectors. But as it turned out, his Karnataka skipper Vinay Kumar backed him up and he reverted with a triple century in the next game. On this very momentous occasion, Mayank said he called up Vinay Kumar for his support over the course of time.

“Also, I called up Karnataka captain Vinay Kumar to thank him for backing me when I was about to be dropped from the Ranji team a few years ago. In the next game, I scored 300-odd runs and have not looked back since,” said the Karnataka batsman.
