The two-match Test series against the Windies is not too far away but the selectors are yet to announce the India squad. They are waiting for a detailed report on Virat Kohli’s wrist injury. The dashing batsman and also India’s second-most successful captain in Tests did not play the recently concluded Asia Cup as he was rested for the gruelling international schedule that India have over the next several months.

Four Indian selectors besides chief selector MSK Prasad were set to name the side on September 26 but it was not done since they were waiting for the medical reports on Kohli. India will play the Windies in two Tests in Rajkot and Hyderabad before a five-match ODI series and three T20Is. The first Test will begin on October 4 while the second on October 12.

The Hindustan Times quoted an informed source as saying, “There was an informal meeting on Wednesday among the selectors and the team will be picked after the MRI scan report comes in. Should be done by tonight.”

Other likely scenarios

India are expected to rest pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, both of whom returned from injury recently and did well in the Asia Cup, for the Test series. Eyes will also be on Prithvi Shaw who is likely to replace veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan who is struggling in the longer format. It is also to be seen whether Mayank Agarwal, who has been in the form of his life and also hit a fine 90 against the West Indies in the one-off warm-up game on Saturday, makes the cut.

This will be the first home series for India in Tests since they played Sri Lanka last November. They had two major overseas Test series this year – in South Africa and England – and they lost both 1-2 and 1-4, respectively. In between, they walloped debutants Afghanistan in a one-off Test in Bengaluru in June.
