Team India will be hosting the Windies team for two Tests, five ODIs and three T20Is starting from October 4. For the two-match Test series, the selectors have axed some of the big names from the squad. Youngsters performing well at the domestic level were given an opportunity.

However, dropping players like Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay proved to be a major point of discussion in the last few days. While some didn’t seem to be pleased, some called it to be a welcome change. Amidst all of these talks, former skipper Sourav Ganguly also shared his opinion on the squad that was picked.

Sourav Ganguly feels dropping Dhawan was inevitable

Shikhar Dhawan had a horrible tour to England. The left-hander had tough times facing the new ball and just averaged about 20 in the entire tour. However, he returned to some good form in the recently concluded Asia Cup where he was the leading run-scorer and also the ‘Man of the series’. Hence, many expected the selectors to pick him in the squad which wasn’t to be the case.

Sourav Ganguly has defended the selectors’ decision and said that dropping him was inevitable. “I am not surprised with this decision as it was inevitable. He didn’t perform well in England and new faces should get chances as well,” said Sourav while talking to the media as quoted by XtraTime.

On the other hand, Ganguly was also shocked to see Bhuvneshwar Kumar omitted from the squad. While selectors said that he was rested keeping the Australia tour in mind, the former skipper had other thoughts. Bhuvi hasn’t played the entire Test series in England and had a fair bit of rest. Ganguly was strongly in favour of the fast bowler’s inclusion in the side.

“I am a bit surprised with this decision as Bhuvi wasn’t there in England after the final ODI as he was injured and he also didn’t take part in the test series as well, so it’s unclear to me that why he needs more rest,” added Ganguly. The Prince of Kolkata was happy to see the ‘talented’ Prithvi Shaw in the side and felt that he would be an asset to the Indian team in the near future.
