India Women team welcomed with rousing chants at Mumbai airport

India Women were having a dream run in the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup 2017. During the course of the tournament, it seemed as if the tournament was meant and tailored to be theirs for the taking. The way the women in blue dominated the oppositions throughout the tournament only strengthened the claims. However, it was a heart wrenching end to the dream run of the India Women.

They faltered at the ultimate stage of the tournament. India lost to England Women in the finals of the tournament by just 9 runs. It was a case of being so close yet so far for the Indian ladies. During the game, they were in total command of the proceedings. It was the last hour play which broke the hearts of a billion fans. Chasing a modest 228 for the championship, India Women were firmly placed at 191/3 at one stage of the game.

However, they ended up bundling up for 219 eventually to lose the match by 9 runs. Well, the defeat can take nothing away from the players. They gave their best throughout the tournament and gave the fans several moments of joy. As the fans and cricket pundits rightly lauded, the women in blue had made all the fans back home very proud. They had started off the journey with a stunning win against the same English opposition.

They then beat strong sides like New Zealand, Windies, and South Africa too. They lost only one game during the league stages – against Australia. They had the revenge taken when Harmanpreet Kaur knocked out the Aussies singlehandedly in the semi-final encounter.

All in all, it was a spectacular stint for the Indian team in the World Cup. They were received with loud chants of ‘India, India’ by the fans when they arrived in Mumbai at 3:45 am in the morning. The team certainly deserved every bit of the rousing welcome that they received at the airport.
