As the world celebrated International women’s day on March 8, Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also decided to take a step forward towards the upliftment of women’s cricket in the country. India’s women cricket team is all set to feature in a Test match after a long wait of over six years.

It is learned that India will lock horns against the England team in a single Test match later this year. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the BCCI are keen on hosting the game around June 2021, almost at the same time when India’s men’s team will be up against New Zealand in the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship.

The final between the men’s teams is scheduled from June 18 to June 22, 2021, by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The date and venue of the Test match between the women’s team of India and England are yet to be decided as the England board is working out the schedule of the women’s team, who are also scheduled to play against South Africa and New Zealand in both ODI and T20I series.

India to don the whites again

Giving the pleasant news of the Indian women’s team donning the whites again, the secretary of the Indian board, Jay Shah tweeted, “On the occasion of #InternationalWomensDay, I’m pleased to announce that #TeamIndia @BCCIWomen will play a one-off Test match against @ECB_cricket later this year. The women in blue will be donning the whites again.”

India had played their last Test match in November 2014 against South Africa in Mysore and had emerged victorious by an innings and 34 runs. Thus far, in Indian cricket history, The Women in Blue have featured in just 36 games in the purest format of the game out of which one was abandoned without a single ball bowled.

Women’s Test cricket has almost gone into oblivion since August 2015 as from then only six Tests have been played and that too between England and Australia only.
