India World Cup Squad 2019: 5 active players from 2015 CWC squad who missed out

Indian selection committee chief MSK Prasad announced the World Cup 2019 squad on Monday, which saw some eyebrows being raised. Although the team looks pretty solid to contest for a third title, some of the decisions taken with regards to backup options has had mixed reactions. Hands down the biggest talking point would be the ousting of Rishabh Pant, who many believed could’ve been a huge part of the side. The selection committee went for Dinesh Karthik ahead of him, owing to the experience the Tamil Nadu cricketer brings in case MS Dhoni is injured and out of contention in the crucial part of the tournament. From the previous edition in 2015 to this one of the most coveted cricket tournament, time has flown by quite smoothly for a few and quite painfully for a few. Despite being an integral part of the previous setup, some prominent names in Indian cricket failed to enter the World Cup squad this time. Here are five active Indian cricketers who were present in the 2015 squad but missed out this time. 1. Suresh Raina Suresh Raina. (Photo by Darrian Traynor/Getty Images) Suresh Raina played some of his greatest cameos for the Indian cricket team back in the 2011 World Cup. He was expected to play a “Yuvraj Singh kind of a role” in the 2015 edition of the championship, but as it turned out, his performance was underwhelming. That was the beginning of the end for the IPL legend. His place in the team after that World Cup was never secured and he struggled to get amongst the runs frequently. He did get a call back in the team for a middle-order role but once again failed to cement his spot. Millions of fans who adored him so much only got to witness him during the IPL as his International appearances started to diminish. He last featured in an ODI game in July 2018 against England and is currently playing for Chennai Super Kings in the 12th edition of the IPL. [interaction id=”5cb32ead9bdbaad5d52cf637″] 2. Ajinkya Rahane Ajinkya Rahane. (Photo Source: Twitter) While Shikhar Dhawan rode his way to a sensational 137 against South Africa at the MCG in the 2015 World Cup, people didn’t fail to appreciate the brilliance of Ajinkya Rahane, who scored a masterful 79 off just 60 balls. His knock in such an important match saw the fans consider him as India’s number 4 for the time to come. Yet, just the way it happened in case of Raina, Rahane too vanished from the International scene very soon. The Mumbaikar lost his touch in the Tests as well, which saw him get dropped for some important games in South Africa and England despite being the vice-captain of the team. Since February 2018, Rahane did not feature in a limited-overs game for the Indian side and his road to the 2019 World Cup saw an abrupt and early end. 3. Umesh Yadav Umesh Yadav. (Photo Source: Twitter) India’s leading wicket-taker from the previous edition, fast bowler Umesh Yadav returned home with 18 wickets in 8 matches. He formed a solid partnership alongside Mohammed Shami, which kept another primetime option in Bhuvneshwar Kumar out of the XI in World Cup 2015 played Down Under. The speedster, however, failed to live up to the expectations after the tournament and suffered the same fate as Raina and Rahane. He had his moments in some of the bilateral series, but his inability to restrict the run flow or bowl in the death overs to good effect was always going to be a disadvantage. He has attributed that to not getting longer ropes in white ball cricket but that did turn out to be a barricade for his dreams as the Vidarbha pacer was left out of the squad announced for World Cup 2019. (Photo by Quinn Rooney/Getty Images) Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to overtake Anil Kumble’s haul of 619 wickets in Tests and his prowess in the 50-overs format too has been quite phenomenal. He made great use of his understanding of the game as well as a wide array of variations to stay relevant in white ball cricket for a long time. The Tamil Nadu cricketer who also captains Kings XI Punjab in the IPL was a part of the previous two World Cup squads and played every match in the 2015 edition. Ever since Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal came into the picture, Ashwin’s contribution to the side was confined to the Test level. Slowly, they completely overtook the off-spinner and it was pretty clear since the beginning of 2018 that Ashwin was not going to be selected for this World Cup even as the third spinner. 5. Ambati Rayudu Ambati Rayudu. (Photo Source: ISHARA S. KODIKARA/AFP/Getty Images) Not many are even aware of the fact that Ambati Rayudu was a part of the Indian World Cup squad back in 2015. His performances for the Mumbai Indians and Baroda at the domestic level earned him a call-up but didn’t get to feature in the playing XI even once, since the team had a settled sort of batting line-up. This time around, he had a much better opportunity in hand, which went out of hand by the skin of his teeth. The Hyderabadi cricketer only has himself to blame. He got the longest rope among all contenders for the number 4 slot and even played against Australia a few weeks back, which was India’s last International assignment before the World Cup. Despite having great support from the captain and management, his poor form and lack of consistency was the only reason Vijay Shankar managed to edge past him in the final team.
