Mumbai Indians beat Rising Pune Supergiant by just 1 run in a low scoring thriller at Hyderabad to be crowned IPL champions for the third time in five years. MI defended a meagre 129 due to the herculean effort by their bowlers who were on the money right from the word go. Even the bowlers of RPS had to be lauded as they bowled magnificently against one of the best batting lineups in the tournament. In a way, the final summed up the way this six-week extravaganza has progressed. This season, the bowlers had their say in most of the matches. Out of 60 matches, 25 times the bowler from the winning side won the Man of the Match award this year which is the most in any season. This had to do a lot with the long home season and tiring wickets towards the end of the season. But bowlers had to be credited for their performances as the Gentleman’s game is dominated by the batsmen these days. The most heartening thing of this year’s IPL was that the Indian bowlers put their hands up for their respective sides and made winning contributions in crunch moments. While there are a lot of encouraging performances from most of the Indian bowlers, we pick those who were consistent throughout the season and led the bowling attack for their side. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (Sunrisers Hyderabad) Bhuvneshwar Kumar. (Photo Source: Twitter) Undoubtedly, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the best bowler of the tenth season of IPL. Right from the start of the tournament he was the undisputed king of the purple cap and held onto it till the end though his team was eliminated in the playoffs. Bhuvneshwar was the go-to bowler for his captain and bowled in both, the powerplays and the death overs. One can say that he defended his purple cap as he was the leading wicket-taker last year as well. Bhuvneshwar scalped 26 wickets in 14 matches and conceded runs at an economy of just over 7 which is highly commendable given the fact that he completed full quota of his overs in almost every game. He has looked confident than ever this year and was ready to take on that extra responsibility for his side. The resurgent Bhuvneshwar is a very good prospect for India for champions trophy and also for the upcoming seasons. Jaydev Unadkat (Rising Pune Supergiant) Jaydev Unadkat. (Photo Source: Twitter) Jaydev Unadkat was a surprise package this IPL as very few expected him to be in this list. He led the thin looking bowling attack of RPS ever since he was drafted into the side and constantly picked wickets with his slower balls and off-cutters. Unadkat has immensely improved his bowling compared to the previous seasons or even to the domestic performances. He picked 24 wickets in 12 matches and even went on to register a five-for against the defending champions when he defended 13 in the final over. Unadkat became the only bowler who bowled 3 maidens in the tournament this year. He showed a lot of character throughout the season and was instrumental in defending middling totals of around 150-160 against the teams like Sunrisers, Mumbai and RCB. He also took the onus on himself in the absence of Stokes in the playoffs and almost won RPS a title by bowling a wonderful spell of 2/19 in the final which included a superb catch of Lendl Simmons off his own bowling. Unadkat has never looked so flawless and could be in line for the national call up soon, albeit in T20Is for now. Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians) Jasprit Bumrah of Mumbai Indians. (Photo: Dhananjay TK/IANS) Jasprit Bumrah, at the age of 23, showed great maturity to become the spearhead of the Mumbai bowling attack which already had the likes of Malinga and Harbhajan Singh. For a change, Malinga had a completely off season and was one of the most expensive bowler of the tournament. But Bumrah made sure that did not affect the team dynamics and performed to his potential in almost every game. Bumrah claimed 20 wickets in 16 innings and was economical as well. He executed his yorkers with utter ease and made the life of the batsmen difficult. The way he bowled in the final was a testimony of how he has bowled the whole season. He played a vital role in Mumbai Indians winning their third title. He is the crucial player for India in champions trophy and fans would hope he performs in the same way as he did in the IPL. Sandeep Sharma (Kings XI Punjab) Kings XI Punjab player Sandeep Sharma. (Photo: IANS) 23-year-old youngster, Sandeep Sharma has mastered the art of swing bowling. He opened the bowling for Punjab and picked wickets in the very first over in few games. His ability to swing the bowl both ways make him the dangerous bowler in helpful conditions. Sandeep picked his career best 4/20 against Delhi when Punjab bowled them out for 67 only. Sandeep finished his prolific season with 17 wickets to his name in 13 matches at an average of 23.41. He also bowled some excellent overs at the death, the best being the penultimate over against Mumbai Indians’ Kieron Pollard. The right-arm fast bowler could only get better from here and would be looking forward to the upcoming domestic season.
