The Indian contingent is currently in Tokyo for Olympics 2020 and after the opening ceremony on July 23, the first day of the games started on a real high for India. Mirabai Chanu of Manipur bagged the silver medal in the womenโs weightlifting 49kg category. She missed out on the gold medal by inches and had to bear defeat in hands of China’s Hou Zhihui.
Nonetheless, as Chanu lifted the silver medal in Tokyo, a wave of happiness ran across the county as almost all big names lined up to congratulate her. Right from PM, the sports minister, and the home minister, all congratulated Chanu for her extraordinary effort at Tokyo 2020. The Indian cricket fraternity also joined the bandwagon and right from Sachin Tendulkar to Ravi Ashwin came up to wish on her huge success.
Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 202kg weight to get her silver
It has to be noted that India would be plying its trade across various disciplines in Tokyo 2020 and a medal would be expected from them. Talking about Chanu, it has to be noted that she lifted up a total of 202 Kg weight- 87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk. After becoming the first Indian to grab a medal in Tokyo 2020, she became the 2nd Indian weightlifter to get the medal while the last one came by Karnam Malleswari in the 2000 Sydney games. She won the bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics in the 69kg category weight.
On the other hand, Manika Batra of India got success on the official day one of the Olympic games, and Menโs hockey team of India also defeated New Zealand in the morning. As many games are lined up one after the other, it would be a thing to see where India will stand in the points tally of the Olympics.ย PV Sindhu in the womenโs Badminton singles category is highly expected to get a medal for India as she went for silver, the last time.
