Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the conclusion of the month of Ramadan, is a much-celebrated occasion. People all over the globe observe the day as a mark of prosperity and brotherhood. It is a day of reverence for all Muslims. Several cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar, Irfan Pathan, Mohammed Shami and Anil Kumble took to Twitter to extend their greetings on this joyous occasion with their followers.
Eid-ul-Fitr, in literary terms, translated to “the festival of breaking fast”. Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is this fasting period for the Muslim. They observe daily fasts during this month, consuming food only before the sunrise and after the sunset. This year, Eid is being celebrated on the 26th of June.
It is also known by the name of Meethi Eid (The Sweet festival) in Uttar Pradesh, indicating towards the atmosphere of happiness and celebration around it. After offering the morning Eid namaaz, families, friends and neighbours assemble together and exchange pleasantries, greeting each other with the words “Eid Mubarak”. Also, Sheer Khurma (a sweet dish made of milk, vermicelli and dry fruits) and the delicious Kimami Sevaiyan are two of the dessert delicacies, intertwined with the festival.
