England levelled the series with a resounding victory over India in the second ODI at Lord’s. More than the defeat the fans of the visitors weren’t pleased with the way they accepted it without putting up a fight. There was hope until MS Dhoni was in the middle, but the veteran played a sluggish knock and never showed any intent to go against the bowling which led to the booing from the crowd. Joe Root was surprised to see the way the most loved Indian cricketer was treated at the Mecca of Cricket.
Dhone came out to bat with India at 140/4 and they had lost their skipper Virat Kohli. Suresh Raina was set in the middle and the duo was expected to take the team closer to the opposition’s total. But what transpired was an abject surrender from Dhoni who never tried to attack and just dropped anchor.
Even after the fall of Hardik Pandya he didn’t anything out of the ordinary which left the crowd baffled. Soon his every dot ball was being booed by the crowd. Eventually, when he tried to hit one out of the ground, was caught in the deep to put an end to his struggling knock.
Not really concerned
Joe Root was the hero of the match who had set it up earlier in the day with a scintillating ton. His unbeaten knock of 113 runs helped England post a total of 322 runs after opting to bat first. During the post-match press conference, he was surprised about the crowd booing MS Dhoni when asked about his slow inning.
However, he was more about happy about the way his team was able to close the game out with a clinical display. They were ruthless on the day and stayed alive in the series with an 86-run victory.
“Yes (it was surprising), but ultimately it doesn’t really concern us. We always try and judge how we approach the game and how we go about things. We try to maintain a professional approach and be as ruthless as possible. We managed to see India through by bowling them out by the end of the game. So we are looking after our own game and putting ourselves in a strong position by the end of the game,” Root said.
