Team India got a proper hiding in the second Test against England at Lord’s as they were handed a thumping by an innings and 159 runs. After the hard-fought first game, the fans were expecting them to put their best foot forward. Instead, the fears of 2011 tour have started doing the rounds when they were whitewashed. MS Dhoni was the captain then who retired in 2014 during Australia tour. However, the fans are missing him badly at the helm and want him to come out of his retirement.
India’s last victory in England came at Lord’s itself in 2014 under the leadership of Dhoni and almost the same set of players are touring this time around as well. But the likes of Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahane were far better players then. On this tour, they are not at all looking confident and it seems that the time has come to look beyond them now.
Also, many have gone against Virat Kohli’s strategy of chopping and changing as well who has now gone 37 successive Tests without an unchanged side since taking over the captaincy. Dhoni, on the other hand, believed in not tinkering much with the combination and used to keep faith in his players more often than not.
Captain Kohli under the scanner
Though the batsman Kohli is performing up to the mark, his skills as the leader have always been questioned. Not that he’s been the bad captain, but his team selection has always been odd. Dropping Ajinkya Rahane, the vice-captain of the team, on the basis of current form in South Africa was ridiculous and the team faced the heat. Since then India’s overseas specialist has lost his sheen.
The same has happened with Cheteshwar Pujara as he wasn’t included in the series opener and he turned out to be the best batsman in terms of balls faced at Lord’s Had he played at Edgbaston, the visitors might have won that game.
It is natural that Kohli’s leadership will be compared to MS Dhoni and so far he hasn’t matched one bit to him. Though the numbers are in his favour, Kohli’s style of leadership has come under the scanner which has, in a way, affected the team’s performance as well.
Here’s how fans urged Dhoni to come back:
@imVkohli Great Player h Bt Great Captain to @msdhoni hi h jisne sabhi Format India ko jitaye h @imVkohli se ye kabhi n ho payega @vikrantgupta73 @harbhajan_singh @hardikpandya7 @bhogleharsha @yuzi_chahal @ashwinravi99 @sauravganguli@BhuviOfficial
