The eleventh edition of the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/category/t20/ipl-indian-premier-league/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indian Premier League (IPL)</a> will begin on April 7 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai where the defending champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on two-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who has made a comeback this year after remaining suspended for two years.

The IPL is not just a popular annual cricket carnival held in India every summer but it is also a reserve of a great many records, created both with the bat and ball as well by fielders. Here, we look at the top records that were registered in the tournament since 2008 when the first edition was played. The tournament completes a decade this year and it is a good opportunity to compile those eye-catching records.

IPL 1: 2008 (April 18-June 1) Champions &#8211; Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals (RR) led by legendary Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne won the inaugural title by defeating Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s CSK by 3 wickets in the final. Royals did not have a great start in the tournament but eventually, they topped the points table and won the trophy. RR’s Swapnil Asnodkar became a household name in this tournament because of his batting form in the competition. This tournament saw mostly the foreigners picking the top honours – team-wise as well as in individual capacity.

Highest scorer: Kings XI Punjab’s (KXIP) Shaun Marsh was the highest scorer in this edition with 616 runs in 11 matches (average of 68.44).

Highest wicket-taker: Pakistani pacer Sohail Tanvir of RR won the purple cap this year after finishing as the top wicket-taker with 22 scalps in 11 matches with the best figure of 6 for 41.

Most number of sixes: Dashing Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya hit most number of sixes (31) in the edition. He did so in 13 innings. He represented MI.

Highest individual score: New Zealander Brendon McCullum slammed an unbeaten 158 off 73 balls for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the first ever IPL match. Interestingly, that century remains KKR’s only hundred in IPL till date.

Best bowling figure: Tanvir’s 6 for 14 against CSK was the best bowling figure in 2008.

Best bowling average: Shoaib Akhtar, who played for KKR in IPL for a brief period, had the best bowling average of 10.80 in the inaugural edition. He took 5 wickets in three matches with the best figures of 4 for 11 against Delhi Daredevils (DD).

Highest team score: CSK’s 240 for 5 in 20 overs scored against KXIP in Mohali was the highest score in this edition.

Lowest team score: KKR’s 67 versus MI in Mumbai was the lowest team score.

Biggest victory (by runs): KKR defeated RCB by 140 runs in Bengaluru.

Smallest victory (by runs): KXIP beat MI by 1 run in Mumbai

Player of the series: Shane Watson of RR was adjudged the man of the series for scoring 472 runs and taking 17 wickets in the tournament. IPL 2: 2009 (April18-May 24) Champions &#8211; Deccan Chargers

Now defunct Deccan Chargers (DC) led by Adam Gilchrist won this year’s title defeating Anil Kumble’s RCB by just 6 runs in Johannesburg. This particular edition of the IPL was played between April 18 and May 24 in South Africa because of general elections in India. The DC were the fourth of the four teams who qualified for the knock-outs and went on to lift the trophy.

Highest scorer: CSK’s Matthew Hayden was the highest scorer in this edition with 572 runs in 12 matches (average of 52).

Highest wicket-taker: DC’s Rudra Pratap Singh won the purple cap by taking the highst number of wickets (23) in 16 matches with the best figure of 4 for 22.

Most number of sixes: DC’s dashing opener Gilchrist hit 29 sixes in the tournament – the most by any batsman and he did so in 16 innings.

Highest individual score: RCB’s Manish Pandey scored the highest score of 114 not out in this edition. He scored it against DC and was the only Indian batsman to have hit a hundred in this edition.

Best bowling figure: RCB skipper Kumble’s 5 for 5 in 3.1 overs against RR was the best bowling figure in this edition.

Best bowling average: KKR’s Charl Langeveldt had the best bowling average of 5 in this edition as he took 3 for 15 in 4 overs in the one game that he played on home soil.

Highest team score: RR’s 211 for 4 against KXIP in Durban.

Lowest team score: RR’s 58 all out against RCB in Cape Town.

Biggest victory (by runs): CSK beat RCB by 92 runs in Port Elizabeth. MI also beat KKR by 92 runs in the same venue.

Smallest victory (by runs): KXIP beat DC by 1 run in Johannesburg.

Player of the series: DC skipper Adam Gilchrist was adjudged the man of the series with 495 runs and 18 dismissals behind the stumps.

IPL 3: 2010 (March 12-April 25) Champions &#8211; Chennai Super Kings

CSK led by MS Dhoni picked their first title this year by defeating Sachin Tendulkar’s MI by 22 runs in the final held in Mumbai. This edition saw the inclusion of five new venues in the IPL. CSK also won the Fair Play Award in this tournament.

Highest scorer: MI captain Tendulkar finished as the highest scorer in the tournament (618 runs) and he took 15 innings for scoring those many runs (average 47.53).

Highest wicket-taker: DC’s Pragyan Ojha took 21 wickets to finish as the most successful bowler in the tournament. His tally came in 16 games with the best bowling figure of 3 for 26.

Most number of sixes: RCB’s Robin Uthappa hit 27 sixes in 14 innings – the highest.

Highest individual score: CSK’s Murali Vijay slammed 127 against RR and it was recorded to be the highest individual score in this edition.

Best bowling figure: CSK’s Doug Bolinger ended with 4 for 13 against DC and it was the best bowling figure in this tournament.

Best bowling average: DD’s Virender Sehwag bowled 5.4 overs in the tournament to finish with 3 wickets for 23 runs and his average of 7.66 was the best bowling average in IPL edition three.

Highest team score: CSK’s 246 for 5 in 20 overs against RR in Chennai.

Lowest team score: DC’s 82 versus RCB in Mumbai.

Biggest victory (by runs): MI beat DD by 98 runs in Delhi.

Smallest victory (by runs): RR beat DC by 2 runs in Nagpur.

Player of the series: Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 618 runs in the tournament, was adjudged as the man of the series.

IPL 4: 2011 (April 8-May 28) Champions &#8211; Chennai Super Kings

CSK won their second successive title this year, defeating RCB by 58 runs in the final in Chennai. Dhoni’s team played three finals in four years and became the first team to win the trophy twice and in successive years. Two new teams – Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK) and Pune Warriors India (PWI) – joined the fray this time and the 10 teams were divided into two groups of five teams but the round robin playing rule was complicated with one group’s team also playing those from the other (twice with one, once with the other four). This way, every team finished playing 14 games in the league stage. This year also saw the introduction of the play-off rounds replacing the traditional semi-finals. The dashing Chris Gayle, who joined RCB after an initial stint with KKR, was the man of the series in this edition.

Highest scorer: RCB’s Chris Gayle scored the most number of runs – 608 – in 12 innings at an average of 67.55.

Highest wicket-taker: MI’s Lasith Malinga took 28 wickets in this edition, the most by any bowler. He took 16 innings for his tally with the best figure of 5 for 13.

Most number of sixes: Gayle hit an incredible number of sixes in this edition &#8212; 44. The next highest was a distant 23.

Highest individual score: Paul Valthaty, the find of the edition, scored an unbeaten 120 for KXIP against CSK while chasing and it was the highest individual score in IPL IV.

Best bowling figure: DC’s Ishant Sharma took 5 for 12 against KTK and it was registered as the best bowling figure in IPL that year.

Best bowling average: Debutant PWI’s James Faulkner had the best bowling average of 9 in IPL IV.

Highest team score: KXIP’s 232 for 2 in 20 overs against RR in Dharamsala.

Lowest team score: KTK’s 74 versus DC in Kochi.

Biggest victory (by runs): KXIP beat RCB by 111 runs in Dharamsala.

Smallest victory (by runs): CSK beat KKR by 2 runs in Chennai.

Player of the series: Chris Gayle won the best player’s award by scoring 608 runs and taking 8 wickets in this edition.

IPL 5: 2012 (April 4-May 27) Champions &#8211; Kolkata Knight Riders

Captained by Gautam Gambhir, KKR won their first title this year after they ruined CSK’s dream for a hat-trick by winning a high-scoring final against them in Chennai. This edition saw the number of participating teams getting reduced to nine with the termination of KTK. This edition saw the most number of close matches as 19 games were decided in the last over and many even in the last ball.

Highest scorer: RCB’s Chris Gayle scored the most number of runs – 733 – in 14 innings at an average of 61.08.

Highest wicket-taker: South African Morne Morkel who played for DD that year, finished with the most number of wickets – 25 – in 16 innings with the best of 4 for 20.

Most number of sixes: Gayle continued with his 2011 form to hit 59 sixes in this edition. The next highest number of sixes was 20.

Highest individual score: Gayle also topped the list of a highest individual score in IPL in edition five. His 128 not out off 62 balls against DD in Delhi was the best.

Best bowling figure: CSK’s Ravindra Jadeja took 5 for 16 against DC.

Best bowling average: MI’s Dhawal Kulkarni recorded a bowling average of 10.66 in 2 games, the best in IPL V.

Highest team score: CSK’s 222 for 5 in 20 overs against DD in Chennai.

Lowest team score: MI’s 92 against DD in Mumbai.

Biggest victory (by runs): CSK beat DD by 86 runs in Chennai.

Smallest victory (by runs): DD beat RR in Delhi and MI beat PWI in Pune – both by 1 run.

Player of the series: KKR’s Sunil Narine was adjudged as the man of the series with 24 wickets at a rate of 5.47 runs per over.

IPL 6: 2013 (April 3-May 26) Champions &#8211; Mumbai Indians

MI won their first title this year under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. They beat Dhoni’s CSK by 23 runs in the final played in Kolkata. PepsiCo replaced DLF as the sponsors of the IPL from this season onwards while DC stood to be the second team to be terminated from the tournament. DC was replaced by another Hyderabad-based franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Highest scorer: CSK’s Michael Hussey was the top scorer in this edition, amassing 733 runs from 17 innings at an average of 52.35. Hussey beat Gayle by just 25 runs to stop him from becoming the highest scorer for the third season on the trot.

Highest wicket-taker: CSK’s Caribbean all-rounder Dwayne Bravo bagged the most number of wickets (32 in 18 innings) in this edition with the best bowling figure of 4 for 42.

Most number of sixes: It was Gayle yet again with 51 sixes in 16 innings. Kieron Pollard was a distant second with 29 maximum shots.

Highest individual score: Gayle’s 175 not out off 66 balls against PWI in Bengaluru continues to be the most incredible innings the IPL has seen, bettering McCullum’s 158 not out scored in 2008.

Best bowling figure: RR’s James Faulkner took 5 for 16 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and it happened to be the best individual show with the ball.

Best bowling average: RCB’s Zaheer Khan registered a bowling average of 9.40 in two matches and it was the best bowling average in this edition.

Highest team score: RCB’s 263 for 5 in 20 overs against PWI. It happens to be the joint highest score (along with Australia) in not only IPL but in any T20 game played ever.

Lowest team score: CSK’s 79 against MI in Mumbai.

Biggest victory (by runs): RCB beat PWI by 130 runs in Bengaluru.

Smallest victory (by runs): RCB beat MI by 2 runs in Bengaluru.

Player of the series: RR’s Shane Watson was picked the player of the series and he is the only player to have won the honours twice in the tournament.

IPL 7: 2014 (April 16-June 1) Champions &#8211; Kolkata Knight Riders

Gautam Gambhir became the second captain to win two IPL titles after Dhoni when he led KKR to lift another trophy by beating KXIP in a high-chasing final in Bengaluru. In fact, it is the only final in which a team won by scoring 200 runs by batting second. This edition saw the number of teams reduced to eight with the withdrawal of PWI. Also, the first leg of this edition took place in the United Arab Emirates because of the general elections. This is the only time the KXIP made the finals in 10 IPL seasons so far.

Highest scorer: KKR’s Robin Uthappa scored 660 runs in 16 innings at an average of 44.

Highest wicket-taker: CSK’s Mohit Sharma took 23 wickets in 16 innings with the best bowling figure of 4 for 41.

Most number of sixes: Breaking the Gayle tradition, KXIP’s Glenn Maxwell hit the most number of sixes in this edition – 36, just two more than the next best Yuvraj Singh.

Highest individual score: KXIP’s Virender Sehwag scored the highest individual knock of 122 against CSK in Mumbai.

Best bowling figure: CSK’s Ravindra Jadeja topped the table again by registering a bowling figure of 4 for 12 against KKR.

Best bowling average: RR’s Ankit Sharma had the best bowling average of 10.75 in three matches in this edition.
