Indian women's cricket coach Tushar Arothe resigns from his role
Their strain in relations sparked after India's loss against Bangaldesh in the Asia Cup
Tushar Arothe, the coach of the Indian women’s cricket team, has resigned from his role. He put forth personal issues as the primary reason for his step down. He also talked about his ruptured relationship with some of the cricketers who he advised to come out of their comfort zone for the betterment of Indian women’s cricket as per reports in ESPNCricinfo.
The Indian women’s team lost the Asia Cup Final against Bangladesh last month. They won all the previous six editions of the tournament and were firm favorites to win the championship this time around. However, they couldn’t hold their nerves in the dying phases of the match and were thumped. The team also slumped against the same opposition in the group matches.
The incidents behind the step-down
Last month, Arothe wasn’t invited to a meeting attended by Mithali Raj, the ODI skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur, the T20I captain, Vinod Rai, the chief of BCCI’s Committee of Administrators (CoA) and Diana Edulji. Team manager Trupti Bhattacharya and Hemalata Kala, former Indian cricketer, and selection committee chief were also present in the meeting.
The women’s team toured South Africa a few months ago and won both the limited-overs series’. During that time, the coach and his played gelled well. Thereafter, Kaur and her girls floundered in the triangular series featuring Australia and England and the failures are suspected to have played a part in the souring of their relationship.
Arothe was appointed back in April 2017 and under his tutelage, Mithali Raj and Co had a superlative campaign in the Women’s World Cup. They beat Australia in the semi-final but slumped against England in the Final at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. The success made a number of their players household names and the cricketers were also rewarded for their impressive performances.
